They operate under both the maritime Transport Act (MTA) and the Health and Safety at Work Act (HSWA). In addition to identifying key safety issues, the team also ensures people who do not comply with Maritime rules and regulations, as well as obligations under HSWA are held to account. By holding people to account for non-compliance, the Team also promotes future compliance and contributes to improving safety culture more broadly.Te tunga | The roleAs the Specialist Investigator you'll provide specialist investigative functions for Maritime New Zealand. The role uses a variety of techniques to investigate a diverse range of compliance and safety matters including accidents and incidents in the maritime transport sector, serious harm injuries, fit and proper person matters, joint agency investigations, and covert investigations into non-compliant or criminal behaviour.The successful candidate will need to have a current and clean driver license and be available to travel within NZ at short notice. It is a requirement of this position for the person to hold warrants under the Maritime Transport Act and the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015. Necessary training will be provided as part of the position.Nou te rourou | What you bring* Proven experience and knowledge of investigation/compliance environment experience or enforcement qualifications/experience to a senior or specialist level - Maritime experience is preferable* Preferably has achieved or working towards, a Level 5 Compliance qualification with specialisation in investigations, or a recognised equivalent level of competence* Experience in legal interpretation and judicial processes* Strong analytical skills with the ability to use logic and accepted investigative methods to solve problems to achieve sound results* Strong communication skills with the ability to be able to write clearly and succinctly in a variety of communication settings and styles* Ability to manage multiple investigations and a varying workload* Ability to work in a culturally safe and respectful manner, always being mindful of the cultural diversity of the industry and having regard to Te Ao Maori and Treaty of Waitangi principles* Awareness of our obligations to Victims under the Victims' Rights Act 2002Mou | For youMaritime NZ recognises and respects te Tiriti o Waitangi and we are committed to working with Maori to build strong, meaningful and enduring relationships to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes.We aim to be a workplace where everyone feels valued, supported with a sense of belonging.
