Research Technologist (Containment Glasshouses)Plant Transformation TeamAuckland, New ZealandVacancy number 54459Permanent Full TimeRange 4/5Are you looking to build your science career in a critical part of our premium crops and technologies space? Located at our Mt. Albert site, this is a great opportunity to be part of a team that directly contributes to growing plants in Plant & Food Research's Physical Containment (PC2) glasshouse facilities. This role offers opportunities to use and develop your practical experience of horticultural techniques, knowledge of plants and innovative thinking to facilitate the development and implementation of new and improved approaches to establishing, growing and maintaining a variety of trees, vines and other plants in a glasshouse environment.What you will be doing | Nga whainga matuaYou will collaborate and communicate with colleagues and students while supporting a diverse range of research projects, that are using genetic manipulation and gene editing technologies to understand the genes and molecular mechanisms controlling plant development and plant responses to abiotic and biotic stresses. This varied role will see you:• Plan work schedules, in conjunction with the Glasshouse Manager, and carry out the co-ordination and timetabling of plant growth and maintenance to meet agreed deadlines.• Ensure equipment in the facilities is operational to a level that meets agreed standards at all times• Contribute to discussions with the Glasshouse Manager, Team Leaders and glasshouse and researcher staff, suggesting improvements to procedures and processes, based on experience and outcomes from existing procedures• Operating within both recognized Health and Safety standards and Ministry for Primary Industries, Environmental Protection Authority and Plant and Food Research Biosafety and Environmental compliance guidelines and Standards.What you will bring | Nga tino pukenga me nga wheakoTo be successful in this role, you will have:• A Diploma in Horticulture or BSc in a relevant science area • In depth knowledge of Plant Physiology or similar experience• Grow-Safe certification to at least entry level, (further training can be provided) • Ability to keep meticulous and accurate records• Physically fit and capable of lifting and moving large (up to 3m) trees in 20 litre pots, pallets, potting mix etc. whilst working in what can be a hot and humid environment.What you will get | Nga hua o tenei turangaThe opportunity to contribute to exciting projects with a team who has an excellent reputation for its science and an organisation known for being a great place to work.
