Full job description Location: Wellington Type: Permanent / Full Time Reference: 855784 About us: Te Matawai was established in 2016 as an independent statutory entity legislated to act on behalf of Maori in the revitalisation of te reo Maori. Te Matawai has a special interest in language revitalisation to restore Maori as a nurturing first language Kia ukaipo ano te reo Maori. Te Matawai also plays a role in Crown strategic activity by way of Te Whare o Te Reo Mauriora, a model representing collective involvement across Crown and Iwi Maori to influence and improve Maori language outcomes for whanau, hapu, iwi, Maori communities and wider society with the shared goal Kia mauri ora te reo. Te Matawai has an innovative organisational model that is driven by evidence-based strategy as we seek to build capability across the Maori language revitalisation movement through relationships, resourcing and community empowerment. We are searching for a Research Manager to be an integral part of the leadership team, leading and managing the Te Matawai research and insights function and developing, managing and executing the Te Matawai Strategic Research Agenda. The role: In this exciting role, you will be required to build and maintain a variety of relationships, both internal and external and visibility across the motu is essential to the success of this role. Duties will include: Development, implementation of the data work programme and the development and implementation of an annual monitoring and evaluation work programme; Provision of professional advice, insight and expertise to the Tumu Whakarae and Board; The sharing of insights, experience research and evaluation data and findings with Pae Motuhake and Te Whare o te reo Mauriora to support investment planning and language revitalisation; Build and maintain a knowledge and evidence base on Maori language revitalisation and reviewing and adapting the research framework and strategy as research initiatives are completed and new and emerging needs are identified; Management of a small team of passionate research and insights professionals. About you: To succeed in this role you will bring: Be a passionate advocate for the revitalisation of the Maori language and actively engaged in Maori language activities; A relevant tertiary qualification is desirable; Proficient in Te Reo Maori and English; Professional expertise/experience in government and/or public sector dealing with the management or leading and implementing research and evaluation projects/service; Deep working experience in data mining, mapping and information analysis; Strong project management skills – able to strategise, plan and coordinate resources to meet agreed objectives, and measure and report progress against agreed outcomes; Knowledgeable in, and ability to apply, appropriate analytical and research methodologies to meet agreed objectives; Has proven experience in procuring cost-effective services to achieve research, monitoring and evaluation targets; Strong communication (written and oral) and relationship management skills; Enjoy working as a team member, at a high level, and working collectively to get results; An active participant (kanohi kitea) in Te Ao Maori; Experience in working with whanau, hapu, iwi, Maori organisations and Maori communities; Understand government and the public service and public-sector processes – understanding the rationale and mechanisms of government intervention i.e. reasons for government intervention, the available intervention mechanisms and alternatives to government interventions; Politically aware and comfortable working within the political context; Enjoy working collectively to get results; Sound understanding of tikanga and Treaty of Waitangi principles; Proficient in Microsoft Office 365 suite.
