About us | Ko wai matou
At Waka Kotahi, the NZ Transport Agency, it all starts with our people. The organisation's performance and success depends on the people who choose to make this a great place to work and make a difference for Aotearoa. Waka Kotahi has a strong future focus, understanding that new technologies and changing customer expectations mean the transport system we know today will not be the one we deliver in ten years time.
The Design team supports Waka Kotahi to bring design thinking and human centred ways of working to solve important problems and deliver outstanding service interactions and strategies. We use insights, research and analytics; and customer-centric design methods to create transport solutions that help people get the most out of life and help communities and businesses to thrive.
The opportunity | Te Whiwhinga mahi
The Principal Service Designer is a lead role within the design team. You will use your expertise to ensure design thinking is integrated into projects and improvement activities, to support the Agency to create an excellent transport system that meets the expectations and needs of all New Zealanders.
This role offers the opportunity to interact with and lead significant pieces of work. You will be an advocate for good design outcomes and support a variety of projects throughout the business, ensuring activities are produced and delivered to the highest quality.
You will be leading strategic design assignments, producing value propositions, leading service experience sprints to shape and deliver improvements to services and create better experiences across the transport system.
You will apply significant service design and strategy expertise to shape insights and work through complex problem solving to create clear concepts and ways forward. You will co-design innovative concepts in line with business goals and bring multi-disciplinary project teams on the journey.
Other key aspects of this role will be leading, developing and mentoring people, as well as strengthening systems processes and parameters within the team. We are looking for an adaptive, strong, supportive person who is inclusive and a clear communicator who can operate within a small but growing team.
You could come from various backgrounds, but what is important is your ability to think and work strategically and be able to translate technical jargon into easily understood information.
About you | Ko koe tenei
To be successful in this role, you will bring:
Proven experience of delivering strategic design and service design projects of various sizes and methodologies to quality, time and budget constraints.
Significant practical experience using a broad range of human-centred design methods and approaches, particularly service proposition development, workshop facilitation, customer co-design and training.
Experience designing and delivering qualitative research (design, marketing, history, sociology, anthropology, psychology or similar).
Proven track record in leading and inspiring project teams to deliver high quality, innovative outcomes in a corporate or consultancy environment.
Significant experience of scoping, planning and costing programmes of work.
Strong commercial acumen.
Tertiary qualification in design, business, psychology or other relevant area or equivalent relevant experience essential.

Should you have an interest in service design and think you have the skills and background to be successful in this role, we would love to hear from you.
