At Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora Taranaki we serve a population of approximately 124,380 people, of which 19.8% identify as Maori, residing within the geographical area that is described as 'Paraninihi ki Waitotara, Waitotara ki Taipake'; spanning from the white cliffs of Pukearuhe to the Waitotara River in Nga Rauru and from the Waitotara river to Taipake which is the most southern point of the Nga Rauru iwi.
The Pouhapai is a Whanau Engagement and Experience Specialists within Te Pa Harakeke - Maori Health and Equity DIrectorate. Alongside other Pouhapai in the team, the role will act as a key interface between whanau Maori and the Health New Zealand Te WHatu Ora Taranaki. It is the responsibility of the Pouhapai to maintain the standards and quality of care that promotes optimal health outcomes and Pae Ora for Maori patients and their whanau.
This will be achieved by supporting whanau to navigate services provided by Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora Taranaki, facilitating seamless referral pathways to appropriate internal and external services, and providing guidance across the organisation to lift our performance and cultural competency standard when engaging with Maori.
What you can expect day-to-day: This position is based in New Plymouth but would need to cover the Hawera Hospital with opportunities to support Taranaki Base Hospital. A fast-paced environment with a variety of responsibility where you will have the opportunity to influence outcomes and provide leadership within the health workforce.  Supported in your professional development. Participates confidently in te ao Maori and has a working knowledge of te reo Maori and tikanga Maori. Understands the dimensions of Maori health and health practices and can apply kaupapa Maori models of health in practice. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a commitment to te reo Maori and tikanga. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently, part of a team, and across departments. Able to build networks and relationships throughout the Te Whatu Ora Taranaki, primary care services, and across sectors. Ability to cope with a high and varied workload including uncertain and emergency situations. Demonstrates excellent time management and the ability to prioritise and multitask.
