The services provided include matters covering judicial review of government actions, constitutional questions including Treaty of Waitangi issues, the enforcement of criminal law and the protection of revenue. Crown Law also administers the prosecution process in the criminal justice system, in particular, Crown prosecutions. We also support the Solicitor-General in their legal leadership role across the Government Legal Network. The purpose of the Attorney-General's Group is to provide legal and administrative support to the statutory functions of the Attorney-General and Solicitor-General, and to provide advice to the Crown, and represent it in Courts and Tribunals, in relation to legal and historical issues associated with Te Tiriti o Waitangi / the Treaty of Waitangi, the Maori-Crown relationship, constitutional matters, international and human rights law. Mo te Turanga - About the roleWith the retirement of our existing Deputy Solicitor-General - Attorney-General's (AG) Group, we are now looking for an experienced people and legal leader to join Crown Law's leadership team. Reporting to the Solicitor-General / Chief Executive, the Deputy Solicitor-General is responsible for contributing to the overall leadership of Crown Law, providing professional leadership to the AG's Group, and carrying out delegated statutory functions of the Solicitor General and Attorney General. The Attorney-General's Group has responsibility for multiple legal teams; two Treaty of Waitangi teams and two Constitutional and Human Rights teams. Each of these teams are led by experienced Legal Team Managers and a cohort of experienced Senior Crown Counsel who - along with the Deputy Solicitor-General - provide legal leadership across the Group. While the role already has system leadership responsibility, we are presently consulting internally about bringing a greater system leadership focus under this role by moving some of our wider system advice, and legal insights function into the AG group. Mou - About YouThis is an exciting role for an outstanding constitutional and public lawyer with significant organisational leadership experience to work with the Solicitor-General and leadership team to provide strategic leadership across Crown Law, the Government Legal Network and the Public Service more broadly. To be successful, you will be an agile and experienced senior leader and an excellent lawyer. You will be experienced fulfilling senior leadership responsibilities, with expertise in handling complex legal matters while supporting agencies and leading the organisation effectively. To support this, you will have : proven experience of leading within and / or across organisations (ideally within the public service) at a strategic level significant experience providing legal advice and representation to senior clients and stakeholders advanced understanding of the current and historical constitutional settings including Te Tiriti o Waitangi / the Treaty of Waitangi and its application to the Crown's legal rights and obligations along with a commitment to supporting a strong and enduring Maori-Crown relationship proven ability to engage influentially with senior stakeholders on complex system-wide issues and to provide legal services within that context a high level of cultural capability and knowledge of the application of Te Tiriti and tikanga as it applies to the law; and the ability to obtain and hold a practicing certificate in Aotearoa New Zealand.If you have any questions about us or the role, please do get in touch, we'd love to hear from you.
