WMIL has a primary focus on protecting, managing, and monitoring natural ecosystems. A key focus of our work is invasive species eradication, control, biosecurity and auditing, bird research and monitoring, and other ecological surveys. Clients include central and regional government, crown research institutes, non-government organisations, community-led conservation groups, and private sector businesses. Many projects involve working closely with local organisations and communities in a partnership approach, which WMIL sees as critical to achieving long-term conservation gains. WMIL is a Toitu carbonzero certified organisation with a commitment to managing and offsetting its emissions. WMIL has a strong ornithological background, with our team being some of the country's leading bird researchers. Ensuring that this is more than just a job, we have a real passion for nature, its conservation and research.The OpportunityWMIL is seeking a highly skilled seabird ecologist to join our motivated team for one year (1 June 2024 to 30 June 2025) focusing on Chatham Island taiko work. This position is a specialised role with WMIL, who are delivering this work in a partnership with the Department of Conservation and local landowners. This role is to implement conservation management to save the critically endangered Chatham Island taiko from extinction. A varied and demanding position, work focuses on intensive monitoring of Chatham Island taiko breeding pairs and maintaining predator control trap lines in the Tuku Nature Reserve and adjacent private land. For 9 months of the year, it is based at the Chatham Island Taiko Trust Field Base "Taiko Camp" in the Southwest corner of Main Chatham Island, with the remaining time spent working out of Blenheim, Marlborough. The final three months may involve multiple overnight field trips to work on a range of our challenging and rewarding projects such as seabird and terrestrial bird research, braided river ecological monitoring, ecological management action, predator control and eradication, biosecurity, detection/incursion response, and Predator Free 2050 projects throughout New Zealand.This is an excellent opportunity for a highly skilled ecologist wanting to join an experienced and specialised conservation and restoration ecology company focusing on avian research, invasive species management and the Predator Free NZ vision, with a commitment to local action in a partnership approach with community groups and local organisations.Person SpecificationThe successful applicant will require the following skills and attributes:A Level three Seabird Banding Certification (for all seabirds) from the NZ National Banding Scheme.A Level three Seabird Transponder Insertion Certification (for pullus and adults) from the NZ National Banding Scheme.A minimum of five years' experience in artificially feeding burrowing seabird chicks (for either rehabilitation of chick translocation projects).A minimum of five years' experience monitoring burrowing seabirds, including the collection of PTT data from burrow loggers.A minimum of five years' experience in predator control, including the control of feral cats using Victor soft catch leg-hold traps.Computer skills for efficient data entry, analysis, and reporting (including the use of GIS software), particular experience in Microsoft Access databases (i.e. a large volume of field data is collected and stored in Access).Experience producing concise, high quality, written work, and reports to managed timescales.What's In It For You?WMIL is committed to conservation action and research to protect and enhance natural ecosystems within Aotearoa and around the globe.
