Lead and manage six operational engineers assessing high voltage outages Work at pace, providing advice to real-time power system control rooms Dynamic role, operating at the centre of the evolving power system! Lead a team that coordinates and assesses outages and provides engineering advice to enable the secure operation of the power system. Transpower owns and operates New Zealand's National Grid - the high voltage transmission network - $5b of assets, connecting areas of generation with towns and cities across New Zealand. 
Transpower also has a central role as System Operator ( https://www.transpower.co.nz/system-operator ) running the wholesale electricity market and operating the power system in real time. As the heart of the power system, we connect the generators of electricity with electricity retailers through the wholesale electricity market. We then manage the flow of that electricity across Transpower's high-voltage transmission network to local lines companies and large industrial customers connected directly to the national grid.

About the Opportunity Working as a critical part of the System Operator function, located in either our head office in Wellington, or in Hamilton, you'll lead the System Security team of ~6 engineers. The team is responsible for assessing grid outages approximately 10 weeks ahead, checking for security risks, and communicating operational requirements needed to support the outages and enable a secure power system. This includes 
ensuring Transpower's outage coordination and assessment process is delivered professionally, efficiently, and in a manner which meets the expectations of all stakeholders, internal and external providing technical advice on the operational implications of outages and any system requirements needed coordinating planned outages on the system and providing System Operator advice to both the Grid Owner and other industry participants engaging with our Market Services, Outage Planning, Planning and Project Support, and real time teams on difficult problems and where specialist advice and technical assistance is required The System Security team is part of a wider Operations Planning team which schedules and assesses outages, provides engineering advice to enable a secure power system, and keeps our operational tool set up to date with changes and newly commissioned equipment.
Part of the Operations Planning management team, you'll provide managerial, commercial, and operational leadership to ensure the team outcomes are delivered. 
You'll work closely with our National Control Centres, Power System team, and Outage Planning team, as well as wider national grid teams. You will also communicate with counterparts in generators, lines companies, and some large industrials. 
You will lead ensuring continuous improvement structures are in place, and drive positive, tangible outcomes for the direct and wider team. 
You will need to keep across the evolution in the power sector; the changes in generation types, operations, the national grid, and how electricity users respond so you and your team can be ready adapt.

Resilient with previous experience in a fast-paced results driven role, you will have lead change initiatives, and guided expert decision making re operational and technical issues. 
Your CV and cover letter will demonstrate: Technical knowledge of and experience within the NZ power system and in electrical engineering ideally unpinned by a relevant qualification. Experience in assessing high voltage outages or in a control room environment would be advantageousExperience leading people in an operational context, ideally as a line manager Well-developed problem-solving skills that bring people on the journey leading to positive tangible outcomes Demonstrated ability to manage analyse and interpret complex processes, identify, and understand requirements and develop alternatives Sound ability to form, maintain, and manage relationships at operational as well as senior/executive management level, and with experienced external industry professionals Join us at Transpower Aotearoa is powered by the people who work here.
