Transpower is New Zealand's owner and system operator of the National Grid. As the transmission network asset owner, we keep the energy flowing - transporting high voltage electricity from where it is generated to cities, towns, and some major industrial users nationwide. 
About the opportunity Due to rapid growth within the Energy sector, we're seeking an adaptable and detail orientated Power System Coordinator to join the National Coordination Centre (NCC) team based in Wellington.
As a member of our professional and collaborative NCC whanau, working 12-hour rostered shifts that include nights and weekends, you will be managing the flow of electricity from generators to end users and ensuring the power system is operated reliably and safely.
Continual improvement and development is important to us, so you'll get involved in projects and initiatives that improve how we operate as we adjust to the many changes coming our way within the sector.
Our team has a diverse range of previous experience. Members of the team have been pilots, flight engineers, electricians, technicians, generation controllers, analysts, economists, and broadcast engineers.
The learning curve is steep, but you'll be guided by our fantastic technical training team and experienced coaches who will support you through our training programme to become a qualified System Coordinator.

As a System Coordinator, you will experience real-time pressure situations. Therefore the ability to think creatively, follow instructions and procedures, and deliver clear and direct communication to others will be critical to your success. You will be relied on to maintain your composure and provide thoughtful solutions when dealing with high pressure, time critical situations as part of a team.
Your genuine curiosity and appetite for knowledge will enable you to pick up and learn new processes, methods and technical tools at pace.
Once fully competent, you will deliver day to day real time operation of the New Zealand power system and wholesale electricity market.
To be considered, your application will demonstrate: Delivery of quality work in a high criticality, process-bound but decision orientated real-time environmentA developed understanding of engineering principlesA high degree of computer literacy and ability to use specialised software applicationsWell-developed verbal and written skillsAbility to establish and maintain relationships and influence othersComfortable working in a shift work and group environmentWhile not essential, the following skills and experience are desirable. Tell us if you have: Experience in a similar operational role or regulated/systems focused environmentIndustry knowledge and experience, such as relevant power systems, engineering or science competencies from similar rolesWell-developed understanding of NZ electricity market operations, Codes, grid operation management and power system safety issuesA tertiary qualification in a science, mathematics or engineering disciplinePlease note: our control room teams work 4 x 12 hour shifts (6.00am - 6.00pm and 6.00pm - 6.00am) and enjoy "long offs" (96 hours off) between shift runs which provides opportunity for more consolidated time with family and friends.
