Our work in the Justice Policy Group is wide-ranging, with opportunities to shape thinking and drive change across the justice and social sectors. It is important and challenging work, with new tests of your critical thinking and collaborative skills every day.
Our Senior Policy Advisors bring a depth of experience to policy work within their teams and across the wider Group. They are responsible for leading and contributing to work on complex and sensitive issues, providing high quality analysis and advice, and contributing to capability building.
Criminal Justice Unit Within Justice Policy Group, the Criminal Justice Unit provides oversight of the criminal justice system through stewardship of key legislation and leadership on critical domestic and international criminal justice issues.
We are looking for a Senior Policy Advisors to join the Unit, which is made up of five teams:
Criminal Law – responsible for work relating to preventing, investigating, and prosecuting crime, offence and penalty design, and addressing organised crime.Sentencing and Rehabilitation – responsible for work relating to bail, sentencing, parole, management of offenders in the community, and rehabilitation of offendersTerrorism and Law Enforcement – responsible for work related to counter terrorism, anti-money laundering, and other law enforcement stewardship (e.g. search and surveillance legislation)Harm Reduction and Public Safety – responsible for a range of work focused on keeping New Zealanders safe - related to alcohol, drug, and firearms policy, family and sexual violence in the law, and aspects of national security.Victims and Youth Justice – responsible for work to shift to a victim-centric justice system, supporting other policy teams to bring victims' justice needs to the centre of their advice, and coordinating the Ministry's victim-centric initiatives. The team is also working closely with the Justice Sector Directorate to deliver new ways of working for justice sector agencies with responsibilities to victims.The successful candidate will have a relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent knowledge, skills, and experience. A national security clearance is not essential but may be of value.

Utua-tau/Salary Range The appointing salary will be between $110,766 - $154,680, based on skills and experience.
