Astute Payroll builds a cloud based platform that aims to to make the management of complex workforces simple. We tackle issues around employee on-boarding, payroll, and invoicing. We are professional (but not corporate), growing (but well established), and most importantly - we're having a lot of fun!
The Role
We are looking for a senior PHP engineer/guru. At a high level, the role isresponsible for designing, building and improving areas of our large enterprise application.
Day-to-day, you'll be:
Meeting with business analyststo understand what needs to be build, and get a good understandingwhy.
Designing technical solutions- bouncing ideas around and ensuring designs fit in line with the development strategy.
Cutting some good PHP codeto move our platform forward. Writing tests, documenting, refactoring as you go and working towards the end goal.
Fixing the occasional production issue.
Collaborating with other developerson larger projects, managing deliverables and escalating issues when they need external help.
You'll be supported by/working with respectful and very capable people, including:

The Applicant
We're looking for people who take ownership of problems and deliver high quality outcomes. You have a good attitude, software engineering comes naturally to you. You get a kick out of refactoring and know how to be most effective. You have:
Lengthy commercial PHP development experienceIdeally with large/enterprise SAAS software
Exposure to a variety of code. You've seen code done right, fast, slow and wrong. You've written all of the above
Familiarity with multiple PHP frameworks. You've leveraged them, but aren't bound by them.
Practical knowledge of design/development patterns and principlesYou work smart, not hard
Recognise patterns and anti-patterns.
Capable of serious engineering and design, but keep yourself in check with YAGNI and KISS
Ability of to think about problems at an abstract level, but are pragmatic about delivery and resolution.
Excellent MySQL knowledge - you know how to optimise, and know why it works
Good communication skills
A positive, "can do" attitude, be self driven and determined!
The Work Environment
We work out of a warehouse style loft office on Flinders Lane that's filled with character. Located right near Flinders St. Station, It's easy to access via public transport. We're bicycle friendly with racks and showers. You also get free use of the gym next door - they'll provide you with a towel and outfit.
Come lunch time, there's an abundance of different flavours of food around to try. We do regular team lunches. If you're the social type, there's organised social events like comedy nights, dinner out, horse races, etc.
The fridge is stocked with soft drinks for throughout the week, and harder beverages for Friday afternoons. We get fresh fruit delivered to the office every week.
You get a Mac or PC laptop - your choice. You can take it and work from home when appropriate. We're flexible with work hours by prior arrangement.
