This is largely a leadership position where you will be responsible for managing a team of junior solicitors, providing training and mentoring, along with handling your own file load. While possessing an established client base would be highly advantageous, it is not a prerequisite.The most important quality outside of experience is leadership abilities. You need to have the character to mentor and train junior solicitors and enjoy doing so. You will need to have excellent drafting and research skills. Confidence, both personally and technically, is important, along with the ability to delegate tasks appropriately and meet deadlines.
