We are seeking an innovative and passionate Senior Curator to join our Hutt City Council Museums Team, which oversees the Dowse Art Museum, Petone Settlers Museum, the Little Theatre and Community Arts.
As a hub for arts and culture in Te Awakairangi, Lower Hutt, Hutt City Council Museums is committed to developing and presenting an inspiring, dynamic and challenging programme across our various facilities and activities that invites meaningful engagement and encourages curiosity. We are looking for a motivated individual that can provide curatorial leadership and expertise, vision and originality across exhibitions, public programmes, collection development, and partnerships with artists, cultural institutions and community organisations.
You will be a member of the Museums Leadership Team, and contribute your expertise to a collaborative and strategic approach to the management of operations and assisting in achieving the vision and goals of the wider organisation. As a team leader and mentor, the Senior Curator is responsible for inspiring curatorial excellence and developing the skills, knowledge and opportunities of the people reporting to and working with them.
You will be a versatile and audience-focused all-rounder with a track record of creating topical and imaginative exhibitions in a fast-paced environment. The Senior Curator will need a strong knowledge of New Zealand art since the 1960s to the present with extended existing relationships within the national and international arts sector. You will also have a working knowledge of social history curation and understand the unique requirements of telling local stories through exhibition making.
We are a team-focused organisation that is looking for an experienced and highly skilled communicator, committed to making our programmes compelling and enjoyable for our many and diverse audiences with a particular focus on local engagement. As a key connection between The Dowse and the art world, you will have a strong existing network of artists, collectors, writers, dealers and colleagues in other art institutions, and the ability to build and sustain trusting and productive relationships.
