Food Technology & Safety (Science & Technology) Government (Government & Defence) Salary range : $82,817 to $96,726 depending on skills and experience. This is a 1 year, fixed term role that offers variety and unique development opportunities! In our Food and Live Animal Assurance team we are responsible for implementing, maintaining and improving our export assurances for food, live animals and animal products all the while keeping New Zealand's reputation paramount as a supplier of safe food across the globe. You will work collaboratively with the team; you know how the saying goes 'a problem shared is a problem halved'. The team are always pulling their heads together to navigate the regulatory requirements needed to support businesses to export their products, frequently bringing risks or scenarios to the table, collaborating with relevant teams across MPI and NZFS to come to an ideal outcome for our customers and enable market access. Businesses need to obtain export certificates and part of this position, you will be working with Section 14 of the Animal Products Act and explaining the systems to our stakeholders. You will also work with product disposition and product returns for the dairy industry. You will provide advice and clarify requirements on particular certifications and assurance systems to enable the product to arrive in the intended country in great condition. You'll have a strong understanding of import/export processes and looking for a development opportunity to learn more about the food industry. To be successful in the role you will need: A tertiary qualification in public policy/food technology/sciences, microbiology, or a related discipline Awareness and general understanding of the animal products act 1999 and its subordinate legislation and understanding of the impacts of regulation, risks & benefits associated with export assurance requirements. Experience with HACCP and risk based management systems Knowledge of food production, processing, storage and transport systems Excellent written, verbal communication with the ability to present technical information clearly when required. Ability to listen and engage others with your ideas and innovative thinking Sound judgement and analytical skills, with particular emphasis on application in a regulatory environment Understanding of official assurances, verification and certification systems The Food and Live Animal Assurance team is responsible for enabling the export of eligible food and live animals (including germplasm). We do this by ensuring the effectiveness and integrity of MPI's export assurance programme, which involves balancing our desire to facilitate trade (growing) with the need for rigour in our assurance system (protecting). We focus on 3 of the 4 pillars of MPI's Strategy 2030: improving sector productivity protecting from biological risk. This Is a small team but works widely with teams across New Zealand Food Safety. Reporting to the Manager Food & Live Animal Assurance alongside 10 direct reports. The team consists of Advisers, Seniors, Specialists and an Intern who have their own areas of expertise such as dairy, meat and seafood and bee products using a E-Certification system to manage the assurance frameworks. This team works closely with Chemical and Microbiological Assurances, Systems Audit Team, Market Access, Food Science and Risk Assessment Groups, Verification Services, Animal Trade and Approvals.
