DEPARTMENT OF MARKETING
About the Department
Marketing is everywhere and effects most of what we do. It's about creating value and understanding why people consume what they do. It also considers the consequences of consumption from social, ethical and environmental perspectives. The Department of Marketing is part of the Otago Business School and has an international reputation for excellence in research and teaching.
The role
As a Research Assistant within the Department of Marketing, you will work closely with the Primary Investigator (PI) on a research project related to how consumers negotiate brand loyalties. Within the context of Brontë literary fans, this research aims to extend previous studies on fan loyalty by examining ‘loyalty’ in the context of a ‘family’ brand i.e. the use of a single brand name for two or more related products. This study proposes to take a broadly netnographic approach and uses methods and techniques drawn from discourse analysis. The research project aims to observe how fans of the Brontës construct themselves as a fan of one or more of the different artists, artworks or places, over other components of the Brontë brand.
Data for this study will be collected from relevant social media sites and Brontë fan forums. The role of the Research Assistant will be to collect and collate the relevant forum threads to be used for this research and uncover the relevant posts within each thread.
Your skills and experience
A degree with a significant research component (e.g. PhD or Research Master degree), or you are a senior PhD candidate with more than 1.5 years of research experience.
Critical thinker and an independent worker.
Strong qualitative research experience.
Experience with discourse analysis is desirable.

Further details
This is a part-time, fixed term position, with a maximum of 160 hours, ending 23 December 2019. Working hours and location are largely flexible.
The pay scale for this position is on the Research Assistant scale (either step 03 - $24.24 or step 04 - $25.80 per hour).
For more information, contact the PI, Associate Professor Maree Thyne via the email address below.
