Resilience in our waste, water, and emergency management is critical for our city.To help us on our journey, Wellington City Council is now looking to add a Principal Advisor - Waste, Water & Resilience to deliver against our strategic and operational outcomes.
This diverse role will sit on the Business Unit leadership team and work alongside others within the leadership team by providing advice and leadership across all BU functions and disciplines while managing the operational interface between Wellington Water Ltd (WWL) and thecouncil.
Ultimately, the BU Manager is seeking a 'true' and trusted advisor that can operateat a strategic and operational levelwhile working across the organisation.The Manager is not looking for a 'yes person' and needs someone who can operatewith high autonomyin a complex environment. Ideally, the Manager would prefer a Parramatta Eels supporter but will accept other teamsexcludingManly. By helping support the Manager - Waste, Water and Resilience, the Principal Advisor will assist in the mentoring and guidance within the wider Waste, Water & Resilience Business Unit to achieve the organisation's visions and objectives.The Principal Advisor will help support and encourage multi-disciplined projects, supporting a culture of collaboration andinnovation,with a customer focus while proactively looking for opportunities to improve delivery on key council priorities.
This role will primarily be the link between WCC and WWLinformingon the planning, progress, and providing policy support that guides and prioritises the development, management, and operation of Wellington's three water network. You will also be providing complex advice on Waste and Three Waters matters to Elected Members and supporting activities to promote the City's health, economic prosperity, and development along with,
Working across council teams to resolve water matters, including operational, consenting, legal, financial, billing, political, and green/brown field developments.Ensuring that Wellington City Council remains an informed client in its contract with WWL andis positioned to resolve complex complaints/escalations and inter-dependencies.Preparing performance and financial reports/papers for WCC officers and elected members.Work with the Emergency Manager to ensure the Council can respond adequately to amajordisruption.Provide advice to ensure adequate effortis allocated to response, reduction, readiness, and recovery planning.Partner with internal and external parties to ensure that waste, water, and emergency management comply with all regulatory standards.Nga tohu me nga wheako| Qualifications and experience
To support theCouncilin achieving its vision and priorities, youwill need todraw on your technical expertisealong with yourconfidence to analyse information to solve problems and make sound decisions.Engaging effectively with stakeholders to understand and respond while keeping our communities front of mind is animportantaspect of thisroleas is your ability to work inclusively with people from different backgrounds andwith differentabilities.
A tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline (within planning, engineering, geography) is desirablealongwith the following skills and experience.
At least10years of relevant experiencesuccessfullyworking in strategic/regulatory planning or policy (specifically in Utility in either Local Government, Central Government, or the private sector).Strong project management experienceincludingleading diverse disciplines to deliver projects within time, cost, and quality standards.Previous successful experience in working strategically and applying critical thinking and sound judgment inthe development of options and provision ofadvice.Understanding of New Zealand's local government sector.Demonstrates good interpersonal and negotiation skills.Ability to question the status quoand to challengewhy thingsare done, and theability tobe challengedwithout taking offence.Working knowledge of contract management disciplines (NZS3910) andprevious experience inmanaging significant contracts.For more information about this position, please feel free to contact Chris Mathews - Manager Waste, Water and Resilience ******
