Whakatane Hospital is a purpose-built secondary care hospital offering acute services to the people of the Eastern Bay of Plenty. Services offered include emergency medicine, paediatric, general, and orthopaedic surgery, obstetrics, and mental health – alongside acute and ambulatory general medicine.
The Medical services consists of a team of seven physicians who work alongside the multidisciplinary team and junior medical staff to provide patient care for both acute and long-term conditions.
Current Physicians within the service have wide experience in acute medicine and areas of subspecialty such as rural medicine.

We are seeking to recruit a Senior Medical consultant with strong skills and experience in acute medicine, an interest in training and growing junior medical staff and a commitment to growth in secondary health service delivery to meet current and future health care needs within an unique NZ population.
With the progression of NZ Rural training programme, we are also interested in applications from NZ Rural trained consultants – particularly those who have training and experience in a range of settings such as high acuity/ emergency care, acute medicine, palliative care, and chronic disease management.
Applicants must hold or be eligible for vocational registration with the New Zealand Medical Council or be training in NZ and with 9 months or less of advanced training remaining to achieve FRACP.
