The Role at a Glance

Key Skills & Competencies
• Crisis counselling
• Managing a varied caseload
• Mental health assessments and evaluations
• Knowledge across a breadth of mental health issues, disorders & needs
• Comprehensive understanding of Tane (male) mental health and wellbeing
• Understanding of individuals with complex trauma and mental health cases
• Creating and implementing intervention focussed treatment plans and reports
• Understanding of the significance of the Treaty of Waitangi to mental health practice
• Understanding of alcohol, Drugs, and Other Addictions *beneficial but not a requirement
Key Duties
Your key skills and competencies will cover a range of core duties within this role; in addition to this, a role as a counsellor within this correctional facility and valued team will require you to;
Deliver counselling services in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary and broader health teams
Manage a caseload of increasing complexity, involving regularly assessing and evaluating the progress of each case, against identified goals, and adjusting strategies as needed
Contribute to the creation of comprehensive treatment and planning reports within the Whare Ora unit and the broader prison context (and provide reports as required by the Health Services Manager)
Collaborate in risk management planning; participate actively in the assessment process for tane at-risk of suicide and/or self-harm and actively manage identified risks in conjunction with the wider team, ensuring clear communication and well-documented care plans
Implement recognized counselling models, adhere to relevant policies, practice guidelines, and maintain a professional code of conduct
Demonstrate an understanding of the Mental Health (Compulsory Assessment & Treatment)
Exhibit cultural sensitivity and Treaty of Waitangi and demonstrate sensitivity to cultural issues and an acute awareness of the Treaty of Waitangi's significance in mental health practice.
Requirements to be Successful in This Role Current Registration and Annual Practicing Certificate with NZAC
DAPAANZ Registered *Only required for addiction counsellor applicants
Demonstration of understanding and application, across the above key duties, skills and competencies
