The Team:What we do
At the Canterbury Health Laboratories (CHL), our Specialist Testing Cluster is proud of its status as a leading-edge reference laboratory. Within our Specialist Testing Cluster we have over 65 skilled and dedicated Scientists and Technicians working across several specialist areas including: Specialist Chemistry, Protein Chemistry, Immunology, Endocrinology, Steroids and Toxicology. We are one of the few diagnostic health laboratories in New Zealand that develop new and innovative tests to meet changing healthcare needs.
We currently have a permanent opportunity working 34hrs per week (Monday - Friday) for an experienced and motivated NZ Registered Medical Laboratory Scientist to join our Specialist Chemistry team! The specialist biochemistry laboratory performs an extensive range (~180 tests) of testing in areas of lipidology, porphyria, paediatric metabolic medicine, metabolite testing (metanephrines), enzymology (TPMT, alkaline phosphatase isoforms), vitamin and trace element testing. This varied position includes training, competency assessment, quality control oversight, meeting IANZ requirements as well as routine bench work.
The Role:Where you fit in
In this role, you will be responsible for the following:
Carrying out techniques to a high standard according to laboratory protocol, and identifying and actioning results efficiently
Effectively and efficiently utilising the laboratory information system to register patients, input data, and access results
Carrying out troubleshooting of tests and equipment, complying with service/laboratory methods
Developing and maintaining your skills and professional expertise through teaching sessions and educational meetings
Your skills will include the following:
A client/patient focus and passion for delivering a high-quality service
The ability to liaise and communicate with a wide range of clinical and technical staff is imperative
Good working knowledge of a wide range of manual and semi-automated techniques, ideally including LC-MS/MS, ICPMS, and HPLC
The ability to lead quality improvement initiatives along with excellent time management skills, enabling you to thrive in a fast-paced environment
