We are currently looking for qualified Meteorologists to join our Aotearoa, New Zealand based forecasting team in Te Whanganui-a-tara, Wellington or Tamaki Makaurau, Auckland on a permanent full-time basis (38-40 hours per week – full time) on a rotating roster including weekends.
Our forecast rooms operate a revolving shift environment, to ensure 24/7 public weather services, and to support the commercial interests of energy, broadcasting and aviation markets spanning time zones around the world.
Experienced (General) Meteorologist The Experienced (General) Meteorologist will work across all operational forecasting (excluding lead and expert) ensuring meteorological information credibly represents MetService and its contractual requirements and obligations. You will oversee the production of forecast products and warnings where applicable, for Aviation, Public and Marine.
Provide dualling, advice and training and on the job coaching for other meteorologists and trainees/internsMaintain effective working operational relationships with relevant counterparts in key partnership organisations and neighbouring NMSsRecommend, and as directed develop, improvements to operational practices and forecaster tools to maintain MetService's status as a world-class National Weather Service and commercial operatorProvide weather advisory/consultancy briefings rostered to niche customers, to meet contractual obligationsObserve recommended practices and standards as required by industry and defined in operational manuals to ensure quality and minimise liability for non-compliance and identify areas for improvement in operational manuals and processes, taking ownership of the implementation if requested by Manager.Salary will be \$84,104 and maximum of \$113,788 depending on skills and experience.
Lead Meteorologist The Lead Meteorologist will work across all operational forecasting (excluding expert) to provide technical meteorological leadership directing the forecast room policy for issuing of accurate, timely and consistent weather forecasts. The Lead Meteorologist will communicate meteorological information accurately and credibly to meet contractual requirements and obligations both nationally and internationally.
Direct, co-ordinate and communicate forecast policy to guide meteorologists to deliver accurate, timely and consistent information to the public and our customersProvide dualling, advice and training and on-the-job coaching for other forecasters and trainees/internsDeliver to the duty schedule and ensure activities meet MetService expectations and commitmentsObserve standards and recommended practices as defined in operational manuals to ensure continuity of quality and minimise liability for non-complianceProduce analyses and prognoses of mean sea level pressure to monitor and forecast situations over New Zealand's area of responsibilityMonitor selected short-term and extend range forecasts for NZ and monitor the tropical South Pacific and associated forecasts and warnings and liaise appropriately with other agenciesLiaise with appropriate agencies in the event of external emergencies (where weather may or may not be the primary cause)Salary will be \$100,379 and maximum of \$135,808 depending on skills and experience.
Essential requirements – for both roles You have a university degree in physics and/or mathematics and or geophysics.Excellent knowledge and experience with Marine, Commercial and Aviation forecast disciplines.You are able and willing to work rotating shift work.You have a good level of writing and briefing skills.You will be able to provide support and guidance to less experienced meteorologists through training/coaching and mentoring.Desirable requirements – for both roles You have completed the (post-graduate) meteorological training course which meets or exceeds the requirements for WMO Meteorologist as described in WMO 1083You have previous experience with diagnosing weather systemsYou have a good understanding of Aotearoa, New Zealand's geography and orographic effects and climateUnderstanding of Consultancy MeteorologyWillingness to learn new meteorological skillsEssential requirements – specific to the Lead Meteorologist role Strong influencing and facilitation skillsPractical knowledge to invoke the requirements of the MetService Business Continuance PlanExcellent verbal and written communication skillsExcellent time management skills and customer focused approachAbility to provide interviews for mediaEtahi korero hai awhina I a koe - Why you should join our team You will feel truly valued and supported in our fun, collaborative environment.
