By working on community events and on an ambulance your role is varied, but the focus is always on providing quality care to patients.Our Ambulance volunteers provide care and support to our patients through their journey which may start at a 111 call and end either being referred to another health care provider, treated on scene, or transported to a medical facility. As an Events volunteer you could be covering anything from local and international sports events, to school fairs or a rock concert.You will have a desire to help people in a compassionate and professional way, embracing the diversity our communities offer, be committed to continuous learning and training, and display St John's core values . Benefits such as discounts for St John services and products, and at national and local retailers.Your commitmentOnce accepted, your online and classroom training will take around 6-9 months to complete.Availability for regular duty and training (approximately two 12-hour shifts and one training session per month)A minimum number of hours are needed to become a first responder. In Auckland this will mostly be through attending events, when you are more experienced you have the opportunity to attend ambulance shifts.Support you can expect after joining our teamWe will give you all the support and education needed to make you safe and effective in the field. This includes:A two-day Operations Induction course.A two-day Operations Risk Management course which is designed to help you stay safe in the field.A two-day Ambulance Driving course (where driving is part of your role) which is supported by online learning and the completion of a driving logbook.A four-day First Responder course which is designed to enable you to assess patients and manage immediately life-threatening emergencies in the community. This is supported by online learning and the completion of a First Responder Student workbook.At the completion of the Operations Risk Management and First Responder courses you will be issued with a Level 3 New Zealand Certificate in Emergency Care (First Responder) and will hold the clinical practice level of First Responder (the foundation clinical level for ambulance in New Zealand).Please note: all appointments are subject to satisfactory completion of pre-employment checks including, but not limited to physical assessment and health check.
