Details of the offer

Engineering Geological Surveyor

We are seeking an Engineering Geological Surveyor to support the Engineering Geology team, whose main research and commercial work relates to landslide hazards and their related risks.
As the team surveyor you will be undertaking extensive fieldwork in remote locations around New Zealand using innovative survey equipment such as terrestrial and drone-mounted lidar systems. You will also have to respond to natural hazard events such as earthquakes and landslides. You will need a strong survey background and an interest in Earth Science and geohazards.
Your main tasks would be: managing and maintaining the teams survey equipment comprising state-of-the-art terrestrial and drone-based lidar systems as well as GNSS and RTK systems; designing and executing field surveys; and post-processing captured topographic and ground deformation data used as inputs for our research and commercial projects.
New Zealand's borders are currently closed to all but New Zealand citizens and permanent residents. International candidates will still be considered, however, they might be required to work remotely as a contractor from overseas until New Zealand's borders reopen.
About you
You will have:
A degree in land surveying or equivalent experience and knowledge.
1 - 2 years' experience in surveying
Essential skills in:
The design and execution of field surveys, to capture topographic and ground deformation data in consultation with appropriate Project and Programme Leaders and the Engineering Geology Team Leader
Processing captured data into usable products such as point clouds, surfaces, volumes and rates and direction of ground deformation;
Contributing to the strategic development of new survey techniques, processes and equipment
Presenting results in a format suitable for use in technical science reports and presentations.
Managing the reduction and archiving of data acquired from surveys and prepare detailed field reports.
In addition, the preferred candidate should have skills in:
RTK GPS surveying using a mix of Trimble and Leica equipment and software
Terrestrial laser scan surveys using Riegl scanners both static and mobile surveys
Airborne (drone) lidar capture (data capture and processing)
Installing and processing continuous GNSS equipment and data
Managing appropriately trained drone pilots and planning airborne surveys
Data processing (point clouds), surface rendering (e.g., 3DReshaper) and volume estimation
Knowledge and experience of working with GIS (Arc)
On top of the technical skills required, you'll also need to work independently, apply initiative as well as take instruction from a range of staff and have a get things done attitude requiring high levels of energy and drive.
