Details of the offer

Job Description - Emergency Medicine Senior House Officer | Emergency Department (ROT02459) Vacancy No: Vacancy No: ROT02459 E mergency Medicine Senior House Officer 1.0 FTE Fixed Term (immediate start until 12 January 2025) Rotorua, New Zealand Achieve work life balance in Rotorua!! Rotorua Hospital is seeking applicants for the position of ED Senior House Officer, starting July 2024 Rotorua Hospital is a District General Hospital in one of the most spectacular regions of New Zealand – native bush, beautiful lakes and rivers, unique geothermal landscapes and some of the best mountain biking and walking/running trails in NZ. Rotorua is also the perfect place to explore all that the North Island has to offer - it is only an hour from the spectacular east coast beaches, and an hour from stunning Lake Taupo with Mount Ruapehu offering skiing, tramping, fishing and water sports. Te Whatu Ora - Health New Zealand Lakes, serves a population of 116,000 people. Rotorua Hospital has all secondary level specialties with tertiary level care provided at Waikato hospital. We are a friendly team of doctors and nurses working in our medium sized ED, with approximately 37,500 attendances per annum. There are 25 beds in the main department plus an 11 bed Assessment and Planning unit (APU). The patient mix is broad with a full range of trauma, medical, surgical, paediatric and minor presentations. The population we serve has relative high levels of deprivation, social issues, poor health literacy and many live in rural and remote communities. This adds to the acuity and complexity of our patient presentations, but makes our work more rewarding. Our population is 35% Maori and as a team we are committed to improving inequity and aligning with ACEM's Manaaki Mana strategy. We are a growing Emergency Department which is focused on evolving to meet the challenges of our population whilst developing as a regional training centre. Rotorua ED is accredited for 24 months of ED training time by the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine (ACEM). We are also accredited for the Paediatric Logbook/Paediatric Emergency Requirement component of training. From the start of 2023 we will be offering an accredited six month Anaesthetic rotation for our ED trainees. This is an exciting development for our department and will allow trainees to complete more of their training in Rotorua. Senior support is excellent, with one of the highest Consultant to Registrar ratios in the country. Our medical team consists of 12 ED SMOs (10 FACEMs, 2 MOSS) and 12 ED RMOs. With only 3 registrar positions there are abundant opportunities for gaining procedural experience – including chest drains, procedural sedations, fracture reductions, asctic/pleural drains, joint aspirations, intubations and arterial lines - and FACEMs are rostered to WBAs on certain shifts paired with a registrar. Half of our FACEMs have achieved Fellowship within the last five years, so are up to date with current College requirements and curriculum and are enthusiastic about helping trainees prepare and pass the College exams. Several of our current FACEMs are involved in writing questions for both the ACEM Primary and Fellowship exams.  If you want the opportunity to balance rewarding Emergency Medicine practice with an amazing lifestyle then come and join the team in Rotorua ED! For further information please contact Te Akauroa Miki – Medical Management Unit, or call (07) 349 7955 **As per the requirements of the Vulnerable Children Act 2014 all new employees will be required to be Safety Checked #J-18808-Ljbffr
