Conservation Technician - Alexander Turnbull Library - Collection Care Type: Fixed Term to 13 December 2024 (Secondment Backfill) Hours: Full Time Location: Wellington Business Group: National Library | Te Puna Matauranga o Aotearoa Branch: Te Haumi Enterprise Partnerships Salary: $63,561.00 - $84,951.00 The Alexander Turnbull Library, part of the National Library of New Zealand, has the mandate to preserve, protect, develop and make accessible its collections for all the people of New Zealand in a manner consistent with their status as documentary heritage and taonga. The Alexander Turnbull Library is looking for a Conservation Technician to join our Collection Care team and support the work of preservation and conservation programs. You will be working in the conservation laboratory and across the whole library including the collection stores and will carry out a range of duties including: Technical services to support conservation facilities, equipment, and supplies Technical services to support preventive conservation programs Assist with the preparation of heritage materials for treatment and digitization There may also be opportunities to: Assist with the preparation of heritage materials for exhibition or loan if required Carry out conservation treatments under the supervision of conservation staff if required The experience, knowledge, and skills you will bring to this position will be: Experience of working in a technical space and/or demonstrate the ability to support the operation of the conservation laboratory Knowledge of conservation principles and standards including those relating to the care of cultural materials and taonga Experience handling heritage collections and taonga Understanding of tikanga Maori as they relate to the handling of taonga Excellent manual dexterity combined with the ability to think creatively and innovatively Enjoying projects that require precision, accuracy, and attention to detail Patience to persist with repetitive tasks Proven ability to meet deadlines, work well under pressure, and being very well-organized Excellent oral and written communication skills and can cultivate professional associations with external colleagues, contractors, and suppliers Good computer skills A current driver's license is advantageous. Candidates should meet the following educational requirements and experience: Tertiary qualification or at least two years of comparable experience, e.g. in bookbinding, engineering, woodworking, framing, or conservation At least two years of experience working with heritage collections or materials or supporting conservation or heritage projects as a conservation technician or in a related field Demonstrable experience of working and contributing within a team If you believe that you meet these requirements and that you would like to join the Collection Care team at the Alexander Turnbull Library, we would love to hear from you.
