The position is jointly funded by Creative New Zealand and Toi Poneke, with the NZSM and Toi Poneke as host organisations. The Artist in Resident will report to the Programme Director, Composition, NZSM. A studio space is provided by Toi Poneke for the duration of the residency, and the residency will culminate in a 4 week exhibition in June 2025 at Toi Poneke Gallery.This position fosters and expands sonic arts in Aotearoa by providing leading artists with the opportunity to develop innovative and substantial work.O pumanawa - About youApplicants must be established sound artists of proven merit, with a track record of substantial and sustained creative activity. Alongside a strong portfolio of creative work, indicators of merit might include peer esteem, such as awards/prizes, inclusion in festivals, international performances, positive reviews, releases, commissions/invitations from leading organisations, and keynotes/conference presentations. These indicators should be provided in an accompanying CV.Preference will be shown to candidates that propose projects seeking interaction with the New Zealand School of Music, other Toi Poneke residents, and most importantly the greater Wellington art community and general public.Etahi korero hai awhina i a koe - Why you should join our teamThe Te Koki - New Zealand School of Music (NZSM), Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington, has the breadth and depth of music study available nowhere else in New Zealand. NZSM is situated in Wellington, the arts capital of New Zealand, and we offer the highest standards of excellence in professional music fields (including classical performance, composition, jazz, music therapy, musicology, and ethnomusicology), and bring an international standard of music education to New Zealanders.Selection InformationThe selection committee will comprise at least 3 members of the staff of the NZSM and Toi Poneke, plus two external experts. The committee will base their decision on the artistic standards and track record of the applicant, as evidenced through a CV and portfolio of representative works, as well as the potential of the proposed work, both in terms of its artistic vision and its engagement with the sound art community in Wellington and beyond. In addition, shortlisted applicants will be invited for an interview with the appointment panel to articulate their vision for the proposed work. Applicants should not intend to engage in other substantial external employment contracts or study during the period of the residency.
