Key leadership role
Varied and fast paced
Opportunity to make a difference

The Department of Corrections is New Zealand's largest government agency. We exist to keep New Zealand safe and to achieve the government's goals relating to rehabilitation and reducing the prison population by 30%.
We are seeking an experienced and energetic Chief Legal Adviser to lead and manage the Department's Legal Services Unit and associated legal resources. Here is your opportunity to make a difference in this important and varied legal role, managing complex work in a dynamic and fast paced environment.
The Chief Legal Adviser plays a key role in the leadership of the Department, and is a trusted adviser to the Chief Executive and the Executive Leadership Team.
You will be responsible for the strategic leadership, direction and oversight of all aspects of the Department's legal and privacy functions. In particular, you will ensure that the Legal Services Unit provides solutions-focussed advice that aligns with and enables the Department's goals and objectives while effectively managing legal risk. You will also play a key role in protecting the Department's reputation, particularly in relation to claims and litigation (generally relating to human rights and judicial review proceedings), and in advising on the impacts of proposed legislative change.
Much of the work of the Legal Services Unit is delivered through the four main legal teams – Litigation, Advice and Legislation, Commercial and Prosecution Support – the managers of which report to the Chief Legal Adviser.
This role requires a broad skill set and significant wide-ranging legal and leadership experience.
To be considered, you must have:
Sound professional judgement
Be an excellent communicator and have strong relationship management skills
Prior experience in leading and managing other lawyers is essential, along with a fundamental understanding of the machinery of government
You will also appreciate the operational, cultural, political and social environment of the Department of Corrections and how it delivers services
You will also have the ability to identify the potential risks and flow-on effects arising from proposed decision or actions, and negotiate mutually acceptable solutions
Public law and litigation experience is highly desirable, as is a relevant post-graduate qualification.

You must hold a current practising certificate, or the right to hold one. The ability to obtain government security clearance may also be required.
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Department at a time of significant change as we seek to make a real difference for those in our care and for all New Zealanders.
Corrections embrace diversity and are committed to an inclusive workplace. We recognise and celebrate the uniqueness of individuals and celebrate the collective talent of all employees.
