Join a newly established team, working in a unique and complex environment using modern scaled agile ways of working to deliver the latest elements of cloud based technology to support NZDF.
The team:
Within our newly created Enterprise Products and Systems (EPS) portfolio group you will be part of a team of Solution Designers working across the EPS Product Portfolio.
Initially you will work in the Platforms Technology Tenancy Product Team which delivers core modern compute infrastructure platform services (e.g. cloud platforms and traditional IaaS compute) that are the foundation of the Defence Information Environment (DIE). The Tenancy Team manages and supports the infrastructure platform that provides both non-production and production environments, as well as key workflow and management tools, for the purposes of testing, simulation and development.
The Platforms team has overarching accountability for all compute products, within the Platform domain, including the sourcing of IT products and systems as required. The elements within Platforms include Database Platforms, Compute and Storage (Public and Private, Hybrid computing) Platforms, ERP Platforms, Middleware Platforms, Website & Container Hosting Platform and Geospatial Platforms.
The role:
As a Solution Designer, you will be responsible for the technical architecture design of the various features and functions within our cloud systems that the Tenancy team will be managing via their Feature backlog.
You will provide design guidance and oversight to the other members of your team, as well as other teams you interact alongside. You will understand user, functional and non functional requirements to design new solutions that meet our customers needs.
You will work closely with Domain and Enterprise Architects, Product Service Designers and members of your, and other teams to deliver solutions that are compliant with the organisations standards, policy and security obligations.
You will also appreciate and be able to articulate the non-technology aspects of proposed solutions in order to provide the complete picture to decision makers and understanding current state to inform future design cycles and continuous improvement, as articulated by blueprints and roadmaps.
Technical skills:
Ideally have knowledge of or exposure to a combination of the following:
Microsoft Cloud Services and Cloud Infrastructure Services development
DevOps as a practice and Azure DevOps as a tool
Test Driven Design
Traditional Infrastructure Services Design – Tin to OS
Infrastructure as Code
Broad OS experience Windows Server 2012-2019, Linux
Virtualisation – VMware, Hypervisor platforms and tools
Azure Backup and Azure Site Recovery, Monitoring and Automation
Networking and Messaging layer
Server Monitoring and Management Tools
Azure Stack (desirable)
Additional skills:
Experience in, or knowledge of:
An experienced Solution Architect with Cloud Services Architecture
Identifying and incorporating Security Requirements into Solution Designs – NZISM
ITIL Service Management – i.e. Capacity, Configuration, Change and Release
Previous experience working in classified or commercially sensitive environments (desirable)
Qualifications and certifications:
Applicable university qualification
Microsoft architecture certifications
Emerging technology monitoring

The majority of roles in the CIS branch within NZDF require a high level security clearance at either Secret or Top Secret Level. The minimum citizenship and residency criteria for the high level security clearances to be granted by the NZ Defence Force are as follows:

• is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last ten years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, the United Kingdom (UK) or the United States of America (USA); and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZ Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at this level.
Please note we also have a small number of roles requiring Top Secret Special clearance. These roles require fifteen years continuous residence in the above countries.
