About us

The University of Otago is a research-intensive University with over 1,500 staff involved in academic research. This Unit is part of a new initiative within ITS, providing research and teaching specific IT support to enable researchers and teaching staff to continue to deliver high quality teaching and research outcomes.

This is a new and exciting team within the ITS group and a key focus of this role will be to ensure that we deliver solutions that meet the diverse needs of academic teaching and research and are secure, scalable, robust and in alignment with IT architecture principles.

About the role

As a the Team Leader for Research and Teaching Equipment you will lead your team to provide advice, guidance and level two support, diagnosis and troubleshooting for domain-specific research and teaching devices, hardware, and systems linked to research or teaching equipment.
You will work with a variety of research and teaching equipment across a range of platforms and technologies, working to ensure that equipment, services and systems continue to operate efficiently and effectively and remain sustainable, resilient, secure and available to meet current (and future) research and teaching demands.

Key Tasks:

Supervise and manage the day-to-day work activities of the team, including timelines, expected customer experience, and prioritising and allocating workflow.

Provide technical support and assistance in the effective and timely diagnosis, troubleshooting and resolution of research and teaching equipment software and IT related hardware incidents, requests and problems.

Collaborate with IT colleagues to achieve issue resolution, referring where appropriate to level three vendor support.

Install, configure, remove, integrate and provide support for hardware connections, operating systems and software packages that run, or are connected to, specialist research and teaching equipment.

Identify opportunities and contribute to the development of plans to transition and prioritise any research and teaching equipment that can be integrated with central ITS services and systems.

You will work collaboratively with academic departments and ITS teams to help understand where existing services can be leveraged and identify opportunities to develop new services that will benefit the University of Otago community.

Your skills and experience

Experience in supervising a team in the delivery of high-quality work outputs and team performance.

Experience installing, configuring, testing and maintaining computer hardware, software and research/teaching equipment.

Experience with application/system integration.

Tertiary sector experience using or supporting research/teaching equipment.

Troubleshooting skills especially in the area of connectivity including ethernet, USB, serial and firewire connection technologies.

Broad knowledge of a range of operating systems both legacy and current including versions of Windows, OSX and Linux.

Any knowledge or understanding of one or more domain/discipline-specific academic portfolios e.g. biochemistry, physics, anatomy etc is a plus
