Details of the offer

The Technology Directorate delivers technology for GCSB, New Zealand Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) and the wider intelligence and security sector. The directorate’s purpose is to ensure that mission requirements are met today and in the future, targeting relevant strategic objectives. The directorate’s work encompasses engineering, data/information management, end-user support, software development, service delivery management, project management, provision of cryptographic infrastructure, and more. The directorate operates in service and capability terms – e.g. attending to policy, process and implementation pre-requisites as much as pure technology or particular systems. The Directorate leads information management for GCSB, including in compliance terms.
Are you passionate about system administration, security and databases and want to take that enthusiasm into a new and exciting environment? Do you feel like you could be doing more with your skills? Do you want the opportunity to expand into other areas of IT technology? Are you interested in being part of an organisation that is committed to the security and well-being of New Zealand?
If the answer to these questions is yes, it’s time to consider working for us at our Marlborough site. Yes, Marlborough. Working here is as much about making a positive lifestyle choice as it is about carrying out satisfying work. Whether you want to enjoy the great outdoors, raise a family or take advantage of the high sunshine hours at the centre of New Zealand’s wine industry, Marlborough should be the choice for you and your family. Are you running yourself ragged with high work hours or carrying the firm’s phone? Because of the security requirements of working for the GCSB, you can work a 40 hour week and not take your work home with you.
What you'll bring to the position:
A passion for system administration with experience in Linux and Windows platforms
Experience and interest in working with databases
Practical work experience and hopefully some formal training like a tertiary qualification
Enthusiasm for solving complex IT problems
Enjoyment working in a team environment
What you get from us:
Ongoing development and training
Kiwisaver employer contribution over base salary
Four weeks’ annual leave plus additional leave entitlements
Generous parental leave and childcare benefits
Subsidised health insurance and vision care
Flexible working environment; family friendly
Active, fun social club
These are some of the skills that the successful applicant will have (you don’t have to have all of them, but hey, we can dream right?):
Linux and Windows system administration with a focus on high availability of services
Experience with SQL databases and particularly with Oracle. Maybe even MongoDB
A sound understanding of data management principles particularly relating to quality assurance, continuity of operations and risk
Virtualisation (vSphere, libvirt and other hypervisor technologies)
Networking (switches, routers and firewalls)
Security (The why’s and how’s of IT security)
Familiarity with scripting and SQL code
Robust understanding of archiving and backup requirements
Interoperability (even if you have to DIY from time to time)
Your skill set will get you in the door, but we will be expecting you to learn a whole lot more. It’s more important that you bring the right attitude and a desire to improve your skill set in a unique environment.
You will join a technology centric team who collectively do amazing things with computing and electronic technology, but you should also be comfortable solving complex problems on your own. You know that with big data comes big responsibility and being a system administrator is its own reward.
You might be wondering how this job is impacted by the COVID-19 situation. Great question. We need good people. Viruses come and viruses go. Good people are always required to support the Government. Now more than ever.
We're a little bit different. The work is always challenging and it's important for the security of New Zealand.
Salary from $79,797 - $119,695 per annum
Midpoint of the salary range is $99,746 reflecting full competence in the role.
A position description can be found attached here.
