We have a new leadership opportunity in our Customs Investigations Unit (CIU). We're looking for a leader who, ideally, has first-hand investigations work experience or has worked in a investigations environment. This means you're familiar with investigations practices. About us… The New Zealand Customs Service | Te Mana Arai o Aotearoa protects and promotes New Zealand through world class border management. We promote New Zealand's international trade, collect Crown revenue, and enforce the law by identifying and seizing prohibited imports and exports. We also make sure that lawful travellers and items can move across our border as smoothly and efficiently as possible. About the role… This is a Supervising Customs Officer - Investigations role, which means you'll be managing people and operational work. You will have demonstrable leadership skills and experience coaching and mentoring others. You are approachable, supportive and willing to help. You make decisions with your team members' wellbeing in mind. You remain calm and level-headed in stressful situations. As a leader, you'll need to develop your team, oversee investigations and operational activities, liaise with a range of internal and external stakeholders, undertake operational planning, and manage resourcing. You'll create and review processes to manage work and make improvements, along with assessing team members' work in the field and as well as in the office. You'll also foster open, trust-based relationships and model the integrity and discretion expected of all team members. Working alongside your Chief Customs Officer, you will be assisting with the overall direction and leadership of the Investigations team you are responsible for. Our investigations team relies on 24/7 and flexible coverage. As an operational leader, like your team, there may be time when you are expected to work long hours. You may start or finish work in the middle of the night or in the early hours of the morning. You may also need to work on weekends and holidays. This may also include being deployed to other regions to assist the wider team. Please note: this position sits within a salary band of $85,372 to $108,053 plus a flexibility allowance of around $15,640. About you… To be successful in this role you must be able to demonstrate: Experience in leading teams in a law enforcement environment Capability to pass Officer Safety and Tactics (OST) and arrest training, and complete annual refresher training Ability to work full-time and flexibly to enable Investigations coverage 24/7 when operationally required A good level of physical fitness. You will need to pass the Police Physical Competency Test (PCT) Ability to work full-time and flexibly to enable Investigations coverage 24/7 when operationally required Ability to achieve and maintain an organisational security clearance and security clearance at a higher* level Requirements to apply Background checks and clearances You will need to obtain a Secret level national security clearance. To achieve a Secret clearance, you must be a New Zealand citizen or a permanent resident who has resided in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom or the United States continuously for the last 10 years. Already having a Secret clearance is a benefit, but not a requirement. We'll guide you through the process. You will also be asked to complete a medical check, drug screening and a physical test. The physical test measures you against average levels of fitness for your age and gender. Due to the nature of Customs' work all candidates must have a clear Police record. Organisational Security clearances are mandatory and are conducted by Customs before job offers are made PCT As part of the recruitment process, you will need to pass a medical test as well as the NZ Police Physical Competency Test (PCT). The Next PCT test dates will be confirmed The PCT is a timed obstacle course, requiring you to do a variety of tasks from climbing a wall, to dragging a weight, to jumping through a window.
