Details of the offer

Student Researcher - Navigational Data Analysis
Using a grant from Callaghan Innovation, our company wishes to employ a research assistant to aid our exploration of maritime navigation analysis to further advance maritime safety. We intend to employ a current student on a short-term full-time basis (10 – 12 weeks) to explore positional data and develop performance metrics which lead to valuable performance tools.
This would ideally suit a student with an interest in data transfer handling and processing so as to enable advanced analysis and display via a web enabled Graphical User Interface (GUI) environment. The tasks include:
A. Research, identify and assess the suitability of practical data transfer protocols and technologies
B. Research and recommend suitable data formats and data base structures
C. Work with web developer to identify optimum coding protocols
D. Research automated analysis methods for performance assessment and reporting.
Our intention is that the research will assist us to develop a web based platform which allows users to interact with and interrogate geospatial data to understand navigational performance. A basic understanding of geographic data is a must. Those with an interest in maritime activities and applying theory to deliver real-world outputs would find this research particularly exciting.
The student will work with a lead consultant (Naval navigation specialist) and company director (aviation risk specialist) to deliver the research in support of this development project.
Application process:
We will be looking for a disciplined self-starter with a self-critical and enquiring mind and an ability to follow leads while remaining focused on delivering to the research objective.
