Waikato hospital Speech Language Therapy department has an exciting opportunity for a speech language therapist to join our team. The role will be predominately based on the inpatient acute medical and surgical wards within Waikato hospital, providing assessment and management of communication and swallowing disorders in adults. The position includes providing cover to general medial wards, critical care, neurosurgery, ENT, maxillofacial and other surgical and medical speciality wards.
The position would suit a therapist with 1-2 years clinical experience, but we will also consider new graduates with relevant recent clinical placements. This position is a permanent, part time position (24 hours a week).
You will work within a close team that provide speech language therapy services to adults and children across the Waikato region. The speech language therapy team work in a variety of areas including inpatient medical and surgical wards, critical care, inpatient outpatient clinics, rural hospitals, inpatient rehab, child development centre and the cleft lip and palate clinic. There will be opportunities to gain clinical experiences across these areas.
You will need a sound knowledge of the use of informal and formal assessment tools, excellent verbal and written communication skills, the ability to work well within a team to achieve client-focused goals and a focus on evidence-based practice.
To apply, you will need to:
Be a registered member of New Zealand Speech-language Therapists' Association (NZSTA).
Have a Bachelors or Masters degree in Speech Language Therapy from an NZSTA-accredited programme; or have had your qualifications approved by the NZSTA.
Have experience working with adults with acquired communication or swallowing disorders.
Have experience performing and interpreting videofluoroscopy swallowing studies.
Have experience working within a multi-disciplinary team working towards patient focused goals.
Have a current valid full New Zealand drivers licence.

Ideally, you will also have:
Experience as a speech language therapist working with adults with acquired communication or swallowing difficulties in an inpatient hospital setting.
Experience with managing patients with complex dysphagia including that as a result of trauma or head & neck cancer.
Experience working as a speech language therapist in an inpatient critical care environment.
Tracheostomy management experience.
