ABOUT THE ROLE

The public health services at Te Puna Waiora (TPW) provide specialist public health medicine advice to the staff at Hauora Tairawhiti, general practitioners within the community, primary health care practitioners, government agencies and the general public within the Tairawhiti region. This role is one of three part time positions within the department and as part of the role the candidate would need to work as the designated Medical Officer of Health (or work towards designation) in a 1:3 roster.

The role would be responsible for an assigned portfolio of duties which would include:
Supporting the development and maintenance of strategic relationships which are crucial to the success of Te Puna Waiora and Public Health including, but not limited to the Tairawhiti Health Board and its committees, Primary Health Organisations and local government;
Support the Operations Manager with operational management of the team. There is no human resource management responsibility
Deliver on Medical Officer of Health statutory and non-statutory roles including communicable disease, environmental health, alcohol and water regulation;
Advocate for population health priorities in a variety of settings and services, with an emphasis on equity;
Participate in teaching and tutorial sessions within the team, the wider DHB and the community;
Provide support and mentoring to other staff including, health protection officers, health promoters and public health nurses;
This position would suit a qualified and vocationally registered (or able to obtain registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand) Public Health Medicine Specialist, but the department would be interested to receive applications from Public Health Medicine Registrars who are nearing completion of vocational training.

We are looking for a colleague and team-player who is keen to enhance our Public Health service, and who will take the initiative to help us develop Tairawhiti as a bicultural region. We particularly welcome applications from public health practitioners who are Maori or who have strong interest and knowledge of Te Reo and Tikanga Maori.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Vocationally registered as a Public Health Medicine Specialist with the Medical Council of New Zealand (registration must be current at all times)

If not vocationally registered in New Zealand then hold a comparable qualification such as:

Fellowship of the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine

Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Public Health Medicine

Fellowship of the Hong Kong College of Community Medicine in Public Health Medicine

Fellowship of the Faculty of Public Health Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians (Ireland)

Fellowship of the Faculty of Public Health Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians (London)

Membership of the New Zealand College of Public Health Medicine or the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine would be favourable

Will be designated (or work towards designation) as a Medical Officer of Health by the Director General of Health.

Current New Zealand Driver's License or Valid International Driver's License - as driving may be required
