What is a product/ software developer at Xero?
At Xero our product is our Xero software that millions of people use everyday across the world. This means you will be building upon existing and new parts of the Xero software. Externally what looks like one beautiful cohesive product, is actually composed of many Xero products.
Each product team is headed up by a Dev Manager who oversees the overall product teams delivery and growth, and a technical lead who floats between pods providing technical support, guidance and mentorship. Each team consists of a couple of Pods, within each pod you could have anywhere between 3-7 devs, a dev team leader, maybe a QA, DevOps (it just depends on the team and what they need)
At Xero we often talk about having multiple teams/families. You have your core team ie your Pods. But you also have your wider product team, which includes your Product Owner, Agile Team Facilitator, Product Designers and Product Researchers. We're a very collaborative bunch so you'll work closely with each other daily.
Our Developers work in a collaborative team environment, continually delivering improvements and features to our customers while looking for innovative ways to handle the challenges of this fast paced industry.
What does your average day look like?
Come on into our beautiful Wellington HQ, start your day with a coffee from our in house barista Jono and then make your way to your stand up. Once you're set up and ready to go your day may consist of any variety of things from focused coding time to mobbing, knowledge sharing sessions with your pod, catch up and collaborate with your Product Designers and Design Researchers who bring the human element to the technology were innovating. Enjoy your lunch and maybe squeeze in the odd table tennis match. Finish the day with some shared learnings with your team, join a Xero Tech Talk event or maybe pull up a bean bag and enjoy some personal development time.
However you structure your day, we want you to leave at the end of the day feeling great, knowing that you directly contribute to making a positive impact to the lives of millions of our customers everyday
About our teams
Transactional Tax Team- is focused on building solutions for accountants, bookkeepers and small businesses to make sales tax and withholding tax compliance easier, more efficient and stress free. Transactional taxes are things like NZ GST, UK VAT and US Sales tax, just to name a few.
Reporting & Insights Team- are currently developing a way to help our customers predict their cash flow in the short term and also working on providing a visualisation of financial performance to start great conversations.
Payments and Billing Systems Team- look after Bank Reconciliation (Bank Rec), the second most used feature at Xero! Their vision is to make the life of our small businesses easier by improving the way they do their bank reconciliation. They're currently working on a revamp experience of the classic Bank Rec.
What you need to be successful in this role:
A mix of frontend and backend skills (C#, Javascript) - But if you only have one, we can teach you the other!
An solid understanding of Agile, Lean and DevOps principles
A focus on quality - we take pride in what we make for millions of users!
You're a collaborator, you love coaching, pairing, mobbing and educating where you can and learning from your team
