Details of the offer

More than one million people visit Department of Conservation (DOC) visitor sites across the country annually. As the country's largest tourism experience provider, DOC, has become more strategic and forward thinking in visitor management and experience design.
Protect, Connect and Thrive are three key drivers DOC's Heritage & Visitor thinking and these values provide the backbone in supporting experience design, visitor planning and rolling out new systems and processes across all levels within the Department.
DOC is looking for a strategically focussed, confident communicator that can influence and advise key decision makers in the management of our visitors and our key visitor sites and destinations.
The Senior Visitor Advisor reports to the Visitor Advice manager and is part of the newly created national Heritage & Visitor Unit. This role will primarily support and advise senior leadership staff in the Southern South Island region (Dunedin to Wanaka and south including the Sub Antarctic Islands). There are also opportunities to support national and cross regional visitor related projects.
Depending on the preference of the successful applicant, we are able to locate this role in either Queenstown, Alexandra, Dunedin or Invercargill. The role will require travel around the region.
The role requires a confident communicator with proven relationship management experience. A background in visitor planning, destination management, travel and tourism are ideal. You will be involved in leading strategic conversations to turn the strategy into reality; connecting across visitor projects, teams and work to improve outcomes and efficiencies.
If you can tick the following boxes, we want to hear from you.
Understand visitor and destination management and have knowledge of New Zealand's recreation and tourism sectors
Influence at all levels of management;
Apply strategic thinking and insights to translate national strategies and directions into regional priorities
Make connections to improve awareness and share knowledge
Lead and influence complex projects in a visitor context
Engage and work in partnership with iwi, hapu and whanau
Coach and mentor relevant staff

What's in it for you?
A fantastic supportive and collaborative working environment. DOC is the multiple award winner of the most attractive employer in the public sector (and second overall) with an average turnover of over ten years, we know people really enjoy working with us.
We offer flexible working options, the ability to sometimes work from home or slightly adjust regular business hours as long as the work gets done.
The chance to join a large organisation that's still growing. You will be joining a newly created unit that's open to fresh perspectives to continuously improving the way we do things.
Excellent training opportunities. If successful, you will attend our exciting nationwide induction and ongoing training programs to learn more about the department and make valuable connections with new colleagues across the country.
Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory, including a valid work visa covering the whole period of employment if applying internationally
Please apply online via the DOC Careers Centre. Applications must include a cover letter and CV. If you have a current police check or security clearance, please attach this to your application.
Applications close at 5pm on Monday, 29 June 2020.
