About the team Our Application Services team helps ensure electricity is delivered to all New Zealanders, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by maintaining and evolving complex critical IT systems. The business domain we work within ensures there are always new and interesting challenges to tackle and that the work we do matters - electricity is essential to our economy, our health system, and the wellbeing of our citizens.
As a team we have been changing at a rapid pace, using new technologies to engineer modern web / mobile applications, intelligent AI/ML embedded automation to streamline workflows and functions, and adopting open-source software and DevOps methodologies to accelerate product delivery.

About the Opportunity The market system is a modernised Java/Spring Boot application that handles the complexities of New Zealand's electricity market. It performs functions such as determining electricity spot prices, balancing real-time supply and demand to ensure system stability. This application manages inputs like electricity generation offers, demand forecasts, and system constraints, and follows a Security Constrained Economic Dispatch process to ensure the grid remains stable while minimising costs across pricing nodes.
This role is focused in the Market System area contributing to a variety of initiatives, including business-led technical improvements and life-cycle refresh projects. This involves balancing both strategic business objectives and necessary technical upgrades to maintain and enhance the market system's performance.
About you As a highly experienced Software Engineer, you'll find this role stimulating! You will naturally think broadly and seek to understand how your work contributes to the wider systems and strategic direction of Transpower, whilst leveraging your product development background and experience working across software development and operations.
To be considered your CV and cover letter will demonstrate: Experience delivering complex domain business solutions with a passion for software delivery and quality. You will possess an innate desire to learn and understand the domain you are working within.
We are seeking 5+ years of analysis, design, and programming experience, including large scale application integration within complex business delivery, and in-depth knowledge of a broad range of hardware and software products. Your skills and experience will include working with applications DevOps toolchains for continuous build, integration, packaging, and deployment.
You will be able to demonstrate skills at a senior level across these languages / frameworks:
