This position will let you put your mark on Thornicroft as you’ll run your own block and plan rotations, with the guidance of the stock manager and farm manager. All team members are encouraged to push the boundaries and lift production. Personal development is encouraged and supported, with all team members encouraged to upskill, through Ag ITO, Farm IQ & Farmax.
You will receive safety training in both side by sides and tractors, as health and safety is important to us. Our focus at Thornicroft is to enjoy the day and get everyone home safe at night, so your genuine commitment to health and safety will see you fitting right in here.
As our new Senior Shepherd, you’ll join a strong team at Thornicroft Station which is a 3000 ha hill country property located on the shores of Lake Mahinerangi, an hour inland from Dunedin in the Lee Stream district. The farm winters 23,000 sheep, beef and deer stock units, and 95% of progeny is finished on farm. Production is based around 7000 lambing ewes, 2000 fawning hinds and 480 calving cattle.
You’ll fit into Thornicroft Station well if you’ve got a strong work ethic and a positive outlook on life. We treat our team with respect and honesty, so these will be a natural part of who you are. You’ll feel comfortable working on your own as well as part of a team.
Some key skills we’re looking for are:
·Experience feeding out with a tractor
·Good understanding of nutrition and animal husbandry
·Strong team of working dogs
·Proactive attitude towards health and safety
The location offers easy access to a range of recreational activities including the local sports club and a great wee primary school located at Lee Stream.
