Details of the offer

The Ministry of Transport is the government's chief policy adviser on transport, providing advice on funding, investment and regulatory arrangements needed to support a sound transport system, including land, aviation and maritime transport. Transport affects every area of our society and we need to think broadly across the system. Our people are passionate about enabling New Zealand to flourish!
Do you have experience undertaking analysis of complex issues, in particular using data and analytics to bring new insights and evidence? Can you lead the development of innovative, practical and robust data analyses, which provide authoritative insights and advice often in areas that are complex and sensitive? Then you can make a positive difference to every area of our society. Be a part of the team who provides internal, expert analytics and modelling capability to inform the Ministry's strategy and policy.
At the Ministry you will find no day is the same. As a Senior Data Analyst, you will have a role in the Ministry's research, data analysis and interpretation providing a basis for its expert policy advice and its role in shaping transport in New Zealand. Some of our areas of work include safety and crash data, current and future travel demand, vehicle emissions, and more!
You'll be someone who can assist in the implementation of a modelling and analytics strategy. Your experience doesn't necessarily have to be in government, but you will need a background where you've gained solid experience in leading and steering projects, problem-solving complex issues, and providing high quality analytics. You will provide expert and accurate advice using statistical and graphical techniques of data and be able to present this through and written reports and data presentations. Along with your analytical skills, you'll be a strong collaborative team-player who can work with others and where possible can coach and mentor to build others' capabilities.
The successful candidate will require the following skills and experience:

Strong background and experience in data science, data preparation, data management and research
A demonstrated ability to think conceptually, and to translate new and emerging ideas in to evidence based insights and analysis
A good understanding of statistics
Ability to work collaboratively with internal customers and other stakeholders to determine requirements, obtain data and information, develop methodologies and communicate results
A strong understanding of data, databases and / or analytical tools such as SQL, SAS, R, Python, Tableau and other analytical and data collation tools

The Ministry of Transport is a small, dynamic and innovative place to work. We have a strong focus on professional development, and you'll receive plenty of support to take ownership of your role. We can consider flexible working options.
We would like to hear from you if you have either public or private sector background, and you are interested in contributing within this fascinating part of the organisation where the information analysed forms the basis of key strategies, plans and policy advice.
The salary band for this role is $91,656 to $129,397.
