The role | Mo te tunga
Situated in the Census Communications and Engagement Unit, this role has been created to lead the development of access and language solutions and support for the 2023 Census. Reporting to the Senior Manager Communications and Marketing you’ll work across the census programme to identify barriers to participation and opportunities to enable access, then lead the development and implementation of solutions. You will identify insights, recommend approaches, requirements and solutions for people in New Zealand who use assistive technology and communication formats.
Strong relationship management and communication skills are key to this role which will see you provide expert and informed advice to the Census Programme. You will build trusted relationships with organisations, agencies and individuals across the accessibility sector, maintaining regular contact, support and helping to communicate the value of participating in the census. You will also recommend and lead the development of translated (language) resources which will explain key aspects of the census, and how to participate, in multiple languages (additional to english and te reo Maori).

Understanding of the barriers and issues that the community with disability face and experience generating solutions and support
Open and inquisitive approach to listen, understand and identify key requirements and insights about user needs
Strong relationship building skills, management and experience to develop genuine and enduring relationships
Knowledge/familiarity or a commitment to learn/understand Te Ao Maori, including applying a Te Ao Maori view to the role
Self-managing and confident to work autonomously to lead discussions and workshops with stakeholders both externally and internally
Project management skills and experience to lead the development and implementation of solutions in a dynamic and complex organisational structure
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Analytical skills to use data, research and information to give expert advice, informing recommendations and approaches for consideration by a wider audience (eg the Census Programme).
