Deliver a programme of national significance
Opportunity to make a difference to the nation’s communities
Flexible work location
Fixed term through to March 2024
About us
At Tatauranga Aotearoa, Stats NZ, our vision is to unleash the power of data to change lives. As New Zealand’s official data and statistics agency, we are tasked with leading the way for New Zealand’s data future, enabling data-led innovation across society, the economy, and the environment.
The opportunity
The 2023 Census journey has begun. This is a mega-project that we manage as a programme, which is already established. We are looking for a highly skilled Programme Manager to ramp up and drive its successful delivery. This is a high-profile programme of work which requires a track record of delivering prominent projects of national significance.
If you’re seeking a challenge, a connection to the work that you do and want to deliver a valuable exercise to the nation; which will provide lasting benefits, we can’t wait to hear from you.
Role purpose
The overall goal of the 2023 Census is to deliver quality census data to our customers from December 2023. This will be achieved by making it easy for people to participate, developing effective partnerships and leveraging administrative data.
Your areas of accountability will include:
Managing the programme on a day to day basis – driving the work forward while holding people to account for delivery.
Operationalising the 2023 Census strategy
Delivering the programme in accordance with the approved census design
Ensuring the programme and its workstreams are structured and resourced to support effective implementation of the approved census design
Building and fostering a programme culture that aligns with The Stats NZ Way of working, and supports health, safety and wellbeing
Who you are
Of prime importance for this role is your demonstrated experience and success in applying appropriate programme/project management methodologies within large, complex projects, not necessarily your knowledge of ‘the business of statistics’. Although having a passion for the power of data will allow you to have a greater connection with our purpose. You will speak from a place of deep technical expertise, contextual understanding and ability to leverage from the lessons you have learnt to ensure successful project delivery overall.

Have challenging, varied and interesting work
Develop and grow their careers
Balance life and work, and
Work in an agile, dynamic and flexible manner.
We care about our people and value your drive, energy and inquisitive nature. We are in search of real people who don’t believe in the status quo and seek to add value every day.
