About the Role - Korero mo te Turanga
The Sector Strategy an teams play a key role in shaping the future of New Zealand's forestry and wood processing sector to support New Zealand's economic development and climate response. The Sector Strategy team takes a whole-system approach, looking at the entire supply chain-from seedlings to sawmills and markets-to identify opportunities that drive sustainable growth and innovation.
As an Policy Analyst, you will contribute to policy development, strategic initiatives, sector investment and industry engagement. You'll work on projects that examine investment opportunities, climate change, land use, international trade, and emerging biotechnologies, informing decision-making at both a government and sector level.
This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a team that directly influences policy, trade, and economic development in one of New Zealand's most cornerstone industries.
About You - Mou
We are looking for a motivated Policy Analyst with:
* Some experiernce in a government policy, regulatory, or strategy role preferred (or relevant transferable skills).
* A broad understanding of economics, geopolitics, climate policy, or international trade.
* The ability to think critically, analyse complex information, and turn insights into actionable policy AND investment advice.
* Excellent written communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
* A collaborative and adaptable approach-you will be comfortable (with support) working across different teams, including government agencies, Treaty partners, and forestry and wood processing stakeholders.

About the Directorate - Mo to matou Ropu
The Forestry System directorate at Te Uru Rakau - New Zealand Forest Service provides operational policy and economic development advice to support the government's forestry objectives and is a critical bridge to supporting MPI's Policy & Trade business units with specialist forestry and wood processing knowledge. We work closely with other directorates and agencies to ensure our policy advice is robust, evidence-based, and effective for the sector. Our work is diverse, ranging from the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) and Tairawhiti land use initiatives to the Maximising Forest Carbon Programme.
With teams in Wellington, Rotorua, and Gisborne, we foster a culture of collaboration and knowledge-sharing.
