Orthopaedic SHO Fixed term position
Southland Hospital, Invercargill - Southern DHB
Southland Hospital, Southern DHB is currently seeking applications from Senior House Officers interested in a career in Orthopaedic Surgery but who would like some more basic House Officer level experience before stepping up to Registrar.
Southland Hospital is a modern, 180+ bed, and secondary level 4 base hospital situated in Invercargill, New Zealand. The Hospital services a population of approximately 108,000 throughout Invercargill, Queenstown, Gore, Stewart Island and rural Southland.
What is the role?
This role has been specially designed to provide Senior House Officers who are interested in a career in Orthopaedics but who consider they need a little more Orthopaedic experience before taking the step up to Registrar.
You will work alongside the dedicated team of House Officers, Registrars and Surgeons. As the SHO grows in capability, there will be opportunities to work alongside Registrars during the after hours with a possible step up to Registrar should a position become available.
Note this role is for SHO level only. Please see the eligibility criteria listed below.
This run is currently categorised as a D on the basis that initially there are few after-hours responsibilities that are rostered.
Where do I fit?
You’ll be part of a dedicated team providing comprehensive elective general orthopaedic services, as well as 24-hour Orthopaedic Trauma and Orthopaedic Emergency care.
The scope of your work will be varied and will include exposure to a range of subspecialties including:
Trauma surgery
Joint replacement
Spinal surgery
Paediatric Orthopaedics
Foot and Ankle Surgery
Sports Medicine Orthopaedic Surgery
Occupational Medicine
Upper Limb Surgery

What do I need?
We are interested in hearing from RMOs with a minimum of two years’ post qualification experience, preferably including at least six months Orthopaedic experience.
You must be legally entitled to work in New Zealand, and be eligible for general or provisional general registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. You can check your eligibility for registration by visiting the Council’s website at www.mcnz.org.nz.
