Dunedin Hip and Knee Arthroplasty and Trauma Fellowship
About the Fellowship
The primary focus of this fellowship is in the surgical management of adults with hip and knee arthritis focussing on primary and revision arthroplasty. The candidate will acquire expertise in the assessment of patients requiring hip and knee replacements and in the operative experience in both basic and complex hip and knee reconstructive surgery.
The Fellow will have the opportunity to carry out between 100 and 150 primary and 20-30 revision joint replacements as the primary operator and will work on a one to one basis with the supervisors for complex revision surgery. The fellow will also help with complex trauma within hours supervising the registrars but have no out of hours on-call commitment.
The Fellow will have the opportunity to carry out clinical and basic science research supported by full time research staff.
Applicants must have completed their orthopaedic training and ideally be in possession of the FRACS or equivalent and eligible for general registration with the New Zealand Medical Council (see website www.nzmc.org.nz) .
Location
The Fellowship is located at Dunedin Hospital which is the main Teaching Hospital for the Southern Region linked to the Dunedin School of Medicine and the University of Otago. The hospital is a 350 bed tertiary referral centre with all surgical specialities including cardiac and neurosurgery.
The department of orthopaedic surgery carries out on average 400 to 450 hip and knee replacements which includes around 50 revisions per year. Non arthroplasty management of hip and knee arthritis i.e. knee osteotomies, hip dislocation for impingement etc, is also carried out in selected cases. Medical staff includes 10 consultants, 7 registrars and 4 house surgeons.
There are 40 orthopaedic beds catering for acute and elective orthopaedics and most days there are 2 operating theatres dedicated to orthopaedics.

Duration
The duration of the Fellowship is usually 12 months starting in July. The Fellowship is accredited by the New Zealand Orthopaedic Association and in the past Fellows have come from England, Scotland, Ireland, New Zealand, Canada and the USA.
Research
The fellow is expected to complete at least one or two major research projects of sufficient calibre to be accepted for presentation at the New Zealand or Australian Orthopaedic Association Scientific Meeting and publishable in a high ranking peer reviewed journal preferably the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery or Journal of Arthroplasty.
Job Description
The Fellow will work under the guidance of the arthroplasty team and carry out weekly arthroplasty clinics and operating sessions. At least one operating list per week will be made available for the Fellow to carry out primary joint replacements and simple revisions depending on previous experience. Complex revision surgery will be undertaken under direct supervision of the consultant in charge of the case with the Fellow doing part of the surgery and over time progressing to increasing independence. Teaching and supervision of registrars is an expectation of the position. This will include more complex trauma but will not involve any on-call.
The Fellow will participate in the academic programme of the department including journal clubs, clinical teaching sessions, audit, pathology and radiology review sessions.
On call
There is no on-call responsibility for this fellowship.
Salary
The fellowship is currently supported with an educational grant from DePuy Synthes (NZ).
