Details of the offer

Are you an Ophthalmologist or an Ophthalmology Fellow looking for a new 12 month locum opportunity with the possibility of permanent employment subject to mutual agreement and available resource. We are looking for someone to join our service providing specialist secondary care services to the region. This position would be suitable for an experienced or a newly qualified specialist or an Ophthalmology Fellow.
The Senior Medical Officer (SMO) team currently comprises three experienced locally based consultant Ophthalmologists and two visiting consultant ophthalmologists. You would be the sixth senior ophthalmologist working in the service.
The wider eye service includes a two registrars (one RANZCO vocational trainee), a visiting fellow, ophthalmic clinic nurses (incl. extended practice roles), an orthoptist, ophthalmic technicians, visiting optometrists and a house officer (shared with ENT service) . The service provides specialist outpatient and inpatient ophthalmology services, and primary health care support.
Technologically the service is well resourced with HD-OCT, OCT-angiography, FFA, ICG, pattern scanning conventional and subthreshold retinal laser, YAG laser, Selective Laser trabeculoplasty (SLT), Subthreshold/micropulse cyclodiode laser, Centurion phacoemulsification and DORC posterior vitrectomy equipment.
We are seeking a comprehensive ophthalmologist with any subspeciality interest (although Vitreo-retinal surgery would be desirable). The role along with local and subregional ophthalmic service provision will include supervision of registrars and teaching of University of Otago Medical School Trainee Interns.
This is an exciting time to join MidCentral District Health Board (MDHB) as it is embarking upon a transformational change programme to firmly establish itself as a high performing health system that meets the current and future demands of its communities, that provides improved patient experiences for service users, and that achieves improved patient and community health and wellbeing. MDHB will build on its significant achievements to date, in particular its investment in developing primary and community care services and relationships. It will work to further reduce service duplication and fragmentation, to move care into and closer to people’s homes, and to achieve an integrated and community focused high performing health system. Applicants must be eligible for vocational registration in Ophthalmology with the Medical Council of New Zealand as well as having demonstrated clinical, management, and teaching skills and the ability to work effectively within the multi-disciplinary team.
General Information
MidCentral District Health Board employs more than 2500 staff at Manawatu, Palmerston North, Tararua and Horowhenua and Otaki districts.
Palmerston North Hospital is a 350 bed secondary hospital, which services an urban population of 80,000 and a total population catchment of 168,000. In addition, the hospital is a teaching hospital, and is associated with both Auckland and Otago medical schools.
