We are looking for an Operational Health & Safety Adviser/Senior to join us on a fixed term/secondment contract until the end of October 2021.
About our team -Mo to matou ropu
The Fisheries Observer & Verification Services team perform a variety of functions that are critical to the sustainable management of New Zealand's fisheries and the environmental effects of fishing. We deliver Fisheries Observer services, plan and manage logistics and deployments for Fisheries Observers, and review and analyse footage captured by our Electronic Monitoring programme.
About the role -Korero mo te turanga
This role will have a primary focus on strengthening the management of health, safety and wellbeing of our Fisheries Observers. Our Fisheries Observers are deployed to sea aboard commercial fishing vessels where they collect high quality data, information, and scientific samples, on behalf of Fisheries New Zealand. Fisheries Observers largely work independently and autonomously while at sea, often in complex and challenging environments. From time to time you will be required to provide support to decision makers on other matters relating to health, safety and wellbeing across Fisheries New Zealand.
Your vision and organisational excellence will enable our organisation to proactively address critical strategic risks and deliver against its strategic priorities. You'll bring a wealth of experience and have relevant qualifications in health and safety. Sector experience is a bonus.
We need someone who is well versed in building and maintaining successful relationships. In this role, you'll get to work with intelligent and passionate people with diverse backgrounds and skill sets across Fisheries New Zealand and MPI, other New Zealand Government agencies, Tangata Whenua, and industry bodies.

Fisheries New Zealand is a new business unit established within the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) to drive a stronger focus on managing New Zealand's valuable fisheries resources, and their place in the wider marine environment. The Fisheries Science & Information Directorate incorporates Fisheries New Zealand's data management, science and research, and observer services functions.
