About the role
Theposition is situated within the Learner Support and Services team, where thepurpose is to work with students, in collaboration with schools and teachingstaff, to identify barriers to students’ academic success. To take actionto remove or minimise barriers through a range of academic support provisionsthat enables success and retention for WelTec and Whitireia students.
Wehave a temporary role available for trimester 2, to cover for a staff member onleave. Ideally this would be fulltime, but we are happy to consider part timearrangements to a minimum of three days per week.
You’llwork within a team of learning advisors who provide academic support to students,the role is varied and sometimes challenging. So, this requires a person whohas a good understanding of themselves and experienced in working with a diverserange of students from varied educational backgrounds.
Ifyou are a current tutor or staff member who has the skills and experience insupporting learners and might like a change in scenery, we could discusssecondment as a possibility.
LearningAdvisorKey Accountabilities
Provide student-centred services to learnersrequiring study skills, assignment or referencing support, literacy or numeracysupport, and/or other assistance
Provide one-to-one, group, online and in-classsupport to students as needs are identified.
Work proactively with tutorial staff in-class toembed and develop learning skills strategies and generic skills, and supportstudents’ learning in a contextualised manner
Develop resources and strategies which supportteaching and students’ learning in conjunction with tutorial staff
Provide classes with impromptu group studyopportunities which complement their in-class learning, through workshops,study circles etc
Assist learners with learning conversations tounderstand their learner contracts and commitments, through initial assessmentsas appropriate e.g. Personal Education Plans, Study skills, Literacy andnumeracy assessments etc., to help students develop individual learning plans(ILPs) and identify their skills, strengths and learning gaps
Develop effective relationships with internal andexternal stakeholders
Location
TheLearning Advisor position will be predominantly based at our Porirua campus; however,you may be required to attend training/meetings at any of the GreaterWellington campuses; therefore, a full driver’s license is desirable.
Qualification/Experience
A relevant tertiary level qualification (ideally degreelevel or above)
Professional experience in the area of services to studentsand academic support
A professional qualification in the area of student servicesor education is desirable
Experience of working with diverse adult learners is anecessity
