Job Specification

This is an exciting opportunity for someone experienced in bird handling and wildlife conservation to join our talented team carrying out critical natural heritage conservation work.
We are seeking someone who can lead a team and work with our Treaty Partner, stakeholders and the community to manage the daily work programme at Pukekura/Taiaroa Head, home of the toroa/northern royal albatross and other native species, and, contribute to the wider work programme of the Coastal Otago Operations team.
To be successful in this role you will have:
specialist knowledge and experience in the practical management of terrestrial species and ecosystems, including animal husbandry skills
the ability to lead and work well as part of a team, and to work independently
project management experience
data collection, analysis and record-keeping skills
experience and knowledge of Te Reo and working with Tangata Whenua
the ability and passion to develop and maintain relationships and work collaboratively with key stakeholders to achieve shared outcomes
sound knowledge and experience in conservation field delivery work
A full New Zealand Driver's License
A natural heritage or conservation management qualification
Bird banding skills, media skills or current Approved Handlers'/Growsafe certificates are an advantage
The Coastal Otago Operations team is highly collegial. As the team at Pukekura/Taiaroa Head mostly work on different days some of the tasks will require you to work alone, albeit you are never far away colleagues. You will have guessed by now we are looking for a responsible and reliable individual.
During the critical Toroa hatching period in January-February (usually 5-7 weeks) the team operate a roster to cover between 10-14 hours each day, depending upon weather conditions and other factors. There is a requirement to vary your days of work and start and finish and times during this period on a pre-arranged roster with the rest of the team.
Please note: a high level of experience in a comparable field is required for this role as you will be expected to draw upon your skills and experience to get up to speed quickly.
Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory, including a valid work visa covering the whole period of employment if applying internationally
