Are you an Anatomical Pathologist looking to escape the chaos of the big city?
Northland District Health Board advocates for affirmative action and actively seeks Maori into our workforce to reflect the community we serve.
The Anatomical Pathology Laboratory in Whangarei Hospital provides histology and non-gynae cytology services for Northland Province, New Zealand, with a population of around 180,000.
Despite our relatively small size, the pathology seen here is remarkable. We receive a wide variety of specimens from both our community and our primary and secondary level hospitals. Our friendly team of Anatomical Pathologists process approximately 20,000 cases per year with support from an external laboratory, accommodating the peaks in workload. Specimens are mostly fixed, but some frozen sections are processed each day. Cut-up requirements are usually minimal as our scientists generally support this role. Routine immunohistochemistry is available on-site. We have a state of the art mortuary which performs, on average, 140 non-suspicious Coronial autopsies and 2 hospital autopsies per year.
The vibrant dedicated technical and support staff and engaging relationships shared with our clinical colleagues make for an exceptional work environment. A generous CME allowance facilitates on-going training.
This permanent 1.0 FTE position would suit either new fellows, with appropriate qualifications, or experienced pathologists. The histopathology role is weekdays only but there is opportunity to supplement this on the coronial post-mortem roster.
The Northland province boasts a subtropical climate and some of the most scenic and exciting coastal areas in New Zealand. There are opportunities for outdoor activities, including surfing, diving, fishing, hiking and biking. On-site, there is a well-equipped staff gym and an open-air pool. Whangarei itself has all the convenient amenities of a modern, small city but the Auckland metropolis is only two hour's drive away for those special weekend activities.
If you are an Anatomical Pathologist, who is a well-rounded team player and you want to make a difference to the population you serve, this is the opportunity you have been waiting for! You must, however, be eligible to gain either locum tenens and /or vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
