Skipper / Guide - Stewart Island

Aihe Wildlife Cruises & Water Taxi is a small business, operating in the tourism industry in Stewart Island. We urgently require an experienced, commercial skipper for immediate start, working the full season to mid-June 2020. This role is available as a permanent position for the right person.
Stewart Island will appeal to the outdoor and nature enthusiast. It is a growing tourist destination with daily flights and ferry service. You must be comfortable working in a semi-remote location.
Work will be carried out mainly in Paterson Inlet, along the Freshwater River, along the NE shoreline of Stewart Island and mutton bird islands out of Halfmoon Bay.
Daily work is varied and interesting so it is essential that you are flexible and supportive when work needs to be carried out.
Due to our customer service orientation, excellent communication and customer service skills are essential. You must be reliable, with good safety ethics, demonstrate teamwork and professionalism. We need staff who are understanding and supportive of our small business. You need to be willing to follow instructions during a busy time in order to get jobs done and achieve successful outcomes for the business and the team and it's customers.
You will be operating a 7.8 m StabiCraft outboard motorboat:
- Carrying passengers to / from walking / hiking / hunting destinations
- Providing wildlife / seabird / scenic / historic cruises.
This work will require you to:
- Carry out daily checks
- Instruct and inform customers
- Lift gear
- Work in varying weather conditions
- Carry out basic maintenance
- Decant and transport and fuel our vessel
- Be in regular communication.
Other duties include:
- Subject to a Passenger Vehicle Endorsement, assisting transporting passengers in the company vehicles and if suitable providing scenic road tours.
- Carrying out any reasonable tasks that the business may require.
Applicants must have:
- A valid Maritime New Zealand Skipper Qualification (or MNZ approved overseas qualification)
- Previous commercial skipper experience minimum 2 years
- Experience operating an outboard motor boat
- NZ full driver's licence, passenger endorsement preferred or willing to obtain
- Current, valid first aid certificate fore the duration of the contract
- Medically and physically fit
- Non-smoker preferred
- Mechanically minded
- Safety conscious.
Additionally applicants must have
- NZ residency or work visa
- Be willing to learn about our local history and wildlife and provide suitable information to our customers
- The ability to attend an interview in Stewart Island.
