About our team
Rural Communities and Farming Support is part of the Agriculture and Investment Services. Our mission is to ensure our rural communities are prosperous, sustainable, and resilient. We stand up for these rural communities, and support farmers, growers, and the primary industries within them through changing times and challenging situations.
Our regional teams are well connected to a range of stakeholders: farmers and growers, industry groups, rural professionals, Rural Support Trusts, local government bodies, and others. These relationships and networks are essential when disaster strikes, as the teams are also involved in supporting response and recovery efforts after significant adverse events, such as severe snow events, flooding, drought, and earthquakes.
Preparing for such events involves helping rural communities to build their resilience and preparedness. This includes but is not limited to supporting and enhancing the capability and capacity of Rural Support Trusts around mental health and wellbeing, and their involvement in biosecurity responses, fundraising and responses to adverse events.
About the role
The Manager Rural Communities and Farming Support -South Island Regions is responsible for analysis, design and delivery of activities that will support a thriving business unit. The main focus will be to manage and lead the regionally based rural communities and farming support staff based in the South Island. The role is responsible to ensure delivery of the Rural Communities and Farming Support work programme, sustainable and resilient rural communities and the primary industries that support them. This role will also be responsible for leadership in disaster events such as droughts and floods which impact on rural communities in New Zealand. There will also be a role to input into the Ministry's policy work and support senior leaders and Ministers and have a visible presence in rural New Zealand.
To be successful in this role you will have:
Experience in staff management and sound knowledge of strategic and business planning processes
The ability to forge and maintain strong working relationships within the business unit, across the wider organisation, the primary industries and rural New Zealand.

Location:
The role will be based in Nelson or Dunedin.
